We were absolutely delighted with our stay at Hotel Café Restaurant Duinzicht during our two-day trip to Schiermonnikoog. It is an amazing choice for a peaceful weekend getaway, combining excellent convenience with a wonderfully relaxed island charm. The location is brilliant. It is situated just a short 5-minute walk from the village center, which gives it a unique sense of quiet and solitude where you can truly listen to the birds and the distant sound of the sea. We also discovered that the local bus running to and from the ferry terminal stops literally right next to the hotel, making arrivals and departures completely effortless. Additionally, a bike rental shop is a mere 2-minute walk away. Since bikes are an absolute must-have to properly explore this car-free island, this was incredibly convenient. From the hotel, it takes only a 5-minute cycle (or a scenic 15–20 minute walk) to reach both the beautiful beach and the famous functioning North Tower red lighthouse. If you follow the main road straight from the hotel, you are treated to a stunning sunset view. The hotel property itself is historic and has a wonderful "touch of time" to it, but it is exceptionally well-maintained. The historic charm is further enhanced by the fact that it sits right at the doorstep of the island's old, non-functioning white lighthouse. Our room was spacious, perfectly clean, and equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The bed and pillows were very cozy, a well-stocked tea and coffee station was provided, and the room remained perfectly warm as the heating operated automatically. The hospitality here is a major highlight. Every member of the staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay. The breakfast buffet in the morning was fantastic—nothing overly fancy, but it offered absolutely everything you could wish for to start your day with good energy.

What did we like? Everything.....seriously! We travel a lot and we are not the kind of people that are impressed by ostentatious displays that don't go very deep.. We like simple, clean, thoughtful, welcoming places that just do a good job at delivering quality. And this place does just that. Absolutely! Comfortable, clean, interestingly decorated, lovely linens and towels, great breakfast, and couldn't be more conveniently situated. We have been visiting the island for about 15 years and have stayed in many different places, but this is our new favorite. And to top it all, the owners are the sweetest kindest folks you could wish to meet. Check it out. You will be delighted. As we were.

FAQs about hotels in Schiermonnikoog

Get Away From it All

Home of The Netherlands’ 1st national park, Schiermonnikoog is the most easterly inhabited island that protects the mainland from the North Sea. Like its fellow Wadden island of Vlieland, it is practically car free, and visitors can’t take cars on the ferries from Lauwersoog.

Previously known as Oosterburen, the only village is also called Schiermonnikoog. This name translates as ‘Isle of the Grey Monks’, and though the friars have long gone, a statue is a reminder of their presence. The village also houses the visitor centre, and a gate formed by a pair of whale bones – a reminder of its role in the now defunct Dutch whaling industry.

As expected of a village, there is not much Schiermonnikoog accommodation or nightlife, but Booking.com does offer some hotels, an inn and a guest house. North of the village is the former lighthouse (now a water tower), and a sand bank where seals can often be spotted. The sand dunes, mud flats and salt marshes of the island make it very popular with birds and the whole east of the island is a nature reserve with restricted access at nesting times.

The easiest way to get around is, in typically Dutch fashion, by bicycle, although horse-and-carriage rides are available through the countryside and along the beach.

The island is quiet and unspoilt, with little traffic (most cars aren't allowed). Most places can be easily reached by bicycle, and these are easy to hire and of good quality. Although there are restaurants and bars, these are not the island's highlights. There is only one supermarket on the island, but it does seem to have most things. The ferry service is slow and infrequent - careful planning in advance is recommended. The cafeteria on the ferry is surprisingly good, although it only does drinks and snacks.

The wind was very strong en a way we could hear anything else. Even walking was not we asy due to the strong wind and after one hour we could only walk for few meters and had to go back because the sea water makes like a small rivers and cut the beach into a smaller pieces. We went to walk in the forest and that was more acceptable and we were able to see few nice animals. But it is an island and normally the main reason to go for an iland is to enjoy walking on the beach Wich was not Joyable at all. And moreover after few hours we have seen almost the hole iland expect the beach and we had nothing more to do. It ended up with tow exhausted persons who could almost nothing interesting seen on do, even just relaxing was not possible because it was very loud because the wind. I wouldn't advice anyone to go there unless they like strong wind.

Schiermonnikoog is a small, windy island.

Schiermonnikoog is a small, windy island. In warm summer weather it would be lovely for swimming and exploring. In winter (when I was there), it is probably best for bird watchers (lots there). I did do some nice walks, but after 2 days I felt I had exhausted most of the possibilities on the island for walking. Restaurants and cafes were good and there were a lot of them - most were very empty on a weekday in February.
