United StatesWe had a lovely stay at Hagurokan. Excellent Japanese hospitality- we felt very welcomed and cared for. The ryokan itself is beautiful, and the traditional meals were so good. Every dish was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The bed was very comfortable. Highly recommend!

The property is very well-maintained and beautiful. The bath is very simple, but perfectly clean and stocked with essentials. The room was very spacious and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was always excellent and the one night I requested dinner, it exceeded my expectations and even contained some local specialties. The proprietors are also very attentive and kind. Within walking distance is access to Haguro Mountain, which I highly recommend.

Breakfast spread was adequate and I like the idea that the hotel provides breakfast spread sourced locally. Al Fresco seating is available which allows guests to enjoy the views of the hotel. Room was spacious and comfortable

The whole vibe of the room was conducive for a solo traveller that didn't need much attention. Facilities quality was decent for the cost. Seriously no complaints, it's wonderful

I had an excellent view of the Japan Sea. My room was big and spacious and felt unique with traditional tatami and wooden floors. The private onsen with sauna and dry room was wonderful! I regret not using it both nights. The staff was helpful and friendly. I enjoyed their self serve coffee/beverage station with tables overlooking their beautiful Japanese garden on the terrace. They also offer cute little treats to eat with your drink which I thought was so lovely.

The host was really nice, the food was delicious, the room very spacious, and last but not least we had the chance to assist to the morning prayer in the lodge. A very unique experience. The lodge is also very close to the 5-story pagoda and the stairs to the Dewa Sanzan temple.

Excellent staff, smooth check in and extremely clean.
The breakfast is worth the upgrade and is made with quality local produce. I particularly enjoyed the stewed aka-kabu (red turnips) and kan-dara miso soup.
The bath and sauna facilities were also nice with iridescent tiling and basic amenities.

Great location close to Hagurosan and Gassan. Hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was very cool too - traditional Shukubo lodging and the building was beautiful. The room was very large, traditional Japanese style like you would expect from a Ryokan stay. Overall great value too (note: I visited for two weekdays in early August).
