Didn't need any daily maid service. Refuse bins are available. Also, all kinds of items that you may need or run out of are right there for you - just grab what you need. Free laundry. A hand mirror (rare for a hotel to have this). Was given an extension cord because no plugin near the bed. Comfy bed. Silent aircon. Great price.

Tamsui is a popular destination to visit, it has a large night market and plenty of food stalls. It's situated right on the riverside with beautiful views. You can take a short 10-15-minute ferry boat ride from Tamsui to Bail where you can feast on more food stalls and walk along the pier. In the heart of Tamsui is the historical Fort San Domingo, I would suggest visiting it during the day and enjoy the breath taking views of Tamsui from the top.

Spent a couple of trips x couple of nights stationed at Linkou - a lovely residential estate great for shopping and dining. Easy access by MRT and bus to other parts (e.g. Guanyin Temple about 20mins away by bus). Good stopover before or after flight from Taoyuan Airport!

Taipei is an overrated city.
Taipei is an overrated city. There's not much unique to do here that isn't already available in any large city.
It's pretty expensive for tourists. Family hotels rooms are $150-300/day during the summer. Food is about 50% as expensive as food in the US, which is way higher than in every surrounding Asian country. I was paying 10-20% of US prices in Indonesia and China respectively.
Honestly, there's not much to do other than eat. Similar to how Japanese sushi is really plain, the bubble milk tea here is disappointingly plain compared to bubble tea in the US. They seem to focus more on fresh drinks.
Napkins and trash cans are hard to find in many locations. We carried our own napkins, but sometimes it's super inconvenient if we need to clean up baby messes.
The city is not baby/stroller friendly. It's also super hot and humid during summer. I broke out in heat/sweat hives.

The highlight of my trip was my morning stroll by the riverside. It was a peaceful Sunday morning. The weather was cool and it was not that sunny. In contrast with the hustle and bustle of the previous Saturday evening (which was also a sight to behold), there were not a lot of people at the plaza and the park apart from some joggers and men fishing in the river.
I culminated my stroll with a visit to one of the popular eateries in the neighbourhood serving authentic a-gei (淡水老牌阿給 創始店, No. 6之1號, Zhenli St, Tamsui District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 251). This was one of the reasons I wanted to visit Tamsui. I ordered a-gei with a side of fish ball soup. And it did not disappoint. The a-gei was very filling and flavourful. It reminded me of sotanghon I used to eat back home. The fish balls, on the other hand, were packed with filling and immersed in a hot peppery soup.
I was looking for a relaxing/restful experience for my weekend trip. I definitely got that during my stay in Tamsui.

Taipei is great and has a great deal to offer, but the midrange / budget accommodation is over-priced and makes longer stays impossible.
In addition, midrange / budget accommodation standards overall are extremely POOR. The photographs for this tier of accommodation barely match reality, and in the worst cases, the sheets are not changed and the shabbiness and poor hygiene is a real problem. I twice left lodgings for hygiene and quality reasons.
5 star hotels in Taipei are fine. The issue is with "affordable" accommodation. We hope that Tourist officials will take an interest in these reviews and do something about it. Taiwan lags FAR FAR behind Japan, yet the prices are approximately the same and often higher!
We strongly suggest you stay in Japan instead.

More interesting if you wander up the back streets.The hotel staff didn’t know where a laundry was but found a laundromat 5 minutes walk away - turn right and walk up the hill - take the first lane on the right and its on the left - self service with washing and drying machines - new and clean.
