Extremely clean property, the cleaning staff really do an excellent job. Breakfast had enough options and the on site restaurant had good offerings for food in case you’re too tired to go into town. Also the views are spectacular. If you’re ok to stay a bit out of town then this is a great option.

What Guests Said About Ushuaia:

Our first hotel room was a 10/10.

Our first hotel room was a 10/10. And, I am a hard and honest grader (my option). Awesome suite (size (3 rooms)) with water views and mountain views out of ALL windows (top floor (5)). Great room/suite. Hug problem. You need to try to avoid any hotel that has construction or remodeling going on nearby. How? Ask hotel. They say No, and there is. You might get your $$ back. The room (suite) we were assigned was great. Huge problem the construction noise and vibration. There is a lot of new construction going on in Ushuaia. Noise where we stayed was so bad (still banging and drilling till 11pm). Think partly because they were pouring concrete and required it to be a 'continuous pour.'

Puerto Williams (which is very difficult to get to on a motor cycle) is the real end of the world. Ushuaia is not even a stop along the way. It is a destination for cruise ships, tourists and bikers completing journeys. Everything is way too expensive (food, trinkets). They charge $30.000 to ride to then end of the highway in the National Park, then you can't get closer than 300 meters from the end of the road sign. The boat tours are totally worth it. Interesting statistic: Population 85,000 I guess Ushuaia is on everyone's bucket list.

We almost skipped Ushuaia, but we were glad we didn't.

We almost skipped Ushuaia, but we were glad we didn't. We especially enjoyed a boat ride on the Beagle Channel (a 3 hour one, not to the penguin island. Laguna Esmeralda hike was very beautiful, almost like an easier version of the Laguna de los Tres hike in El Chalten.

First visited in 1978, when this was a very quiet place indeed. Now quite touristy and seemingly populated largely by youngish, foreign travellers. Some of the attractions - eg the " prison train" - are on the tacky side. A USD10 (for foreigners) fee to walk to the Glaciar Martial is not justifiable; the first half of the walk is up a vast swathe of clear-cut land to be used as a ski run: an environmental horror. Laguna Esmeralda hike is preferable, but expect to meet many, many other walkers on a summer's day; no solitude. If at all interested in birds, visit the well-restored wetlands/bird hides to the west of the Club Nautico, on the waterfront: usually a very good selection of otherwise difficult to spot birds (eg Giant Petrels; Kelp & Upland geese; Antarctic terns).

Ushuaia is not worth a special visit.

Ushuaia is not worth a special visit. We stayed there for 3 nights after a trip to Antarctica, simply because we knew we wouldn’t return. 2 days would be ample unless you want to hike and kayak. Restaurants are very mediocre and the museums not well curated although the information is interesting.

Ushuaia is a unique place — you really feel you are at the end of the world. Visiting in February was perfect because the days were long and the weather allowed me to do several hikes. The landscapes are incredible: mountains, ocean, forests and glaciers all in the same place. The city is small but very charming, easy to walk around and with many good restaurants and cafés. It’s also a great base for outdoor activities like trekking in Tierra del Fuego National Park, boat tours on the Beagle Channel and visiting glaciers. Prices are quite high compared to other places in Argentina, especially tours and restaurants. The weather changes quickly, so sometimes it’s hard to plan activities in advance. Also, if you don’t like nature or outdoor activities, you may run out of things to do after a couple of days.

Hotel Austral Ushuaia offers both rooms and studio accommodations. It's ideally located within a 5-minute walk of the Montiel Viajas Bus Sur bus terminal. It's also very close to the main street, San Martín (with its many dining options), and the bay in the Beagle Channel. A delicious, extensive breakfast was included and served in a large common area. The helpful staff at the reception desk were happy to arrange an airport shuttle.

The view was fantastic from my Channel facing room, as was the view from the 4th floor breakfast room. The hotel was clean and modern, and all the staff were friendly. Angie on the front desk was particularly helpful with dinner recommendations and orientation in Ushuaia. Taxis were easy to organise, just ask at reception a few clicks on the computer and a few minutes later one turns up outside the door.
