We were greeted with a warm welcome (after a stressful journey including lost luggage!). Some cold beer and cold water was handed to us, which was lovely. The surroundings are lovely, we saw lots of birds. Breakfast was also great.

Alajuela is safer than 75% of the neighborhoods in the USA. Like every neighborhood on the planet that is next to an airport, Alajuela can be sketchy af. Reminder: It is full of beautiful people who have to put up with the trouble-makers too (mostly harassing travelers about coke, but I assume those same guys would rob you if you act like a jerk or look like a victim at night. **It is NOT Toucan Hostel's fault at all. Toucan Hostel 100% insures the safety of their guests. I have met amazing travelers at Toucan. I loved when the food Truck was there and hope it returns.** I stay at Toucan every time I arrive and leave the country. I go to the bar next door every time and have NEVER had trouble with the locals there. Even on the bar's crazy Karaoke night when all of the OGs are there. Back in the US, I would have been robbed in 2 seconds. The Alajuela locals and thugs know 100% that we guests are staying at Toucan Hostel and we are just passing through. They were all quite cordial to be honest and keep the aggro guys at away. You will be safe on Toucan's street. I walked from Toucan to the Alajuela Wal-Mart multiple times and always take that blocked-off for cars short-cut through that small barrio nearby & never had issues during the day. Be cool and they'll be cool.

We found 2 nights before a flight to be perfect, giving us a spare day to putter. We went to the zoo this time. The museum is worth a visit as is the cathedral. Lots of choice for food. It is a very busy city but only 10 minutes from the airport. We also spent about 4 hours at City Mall as our flight was at midnight. There is no place to stash your bags at the airport so we had to keep them with us at the mall.

Alajuela City is a small town with an accessible centre.

Alajuela City is a small town with an accessible centre. It isn't full of tourists, people are living their lives and going about their daily business. It was very pleasant and friendly, we ate in a covered market with lots going on around us in a cheerful busy atmosphere. Easygoing with a pleasant central square.

We only had a few hours between flights.

We only had a few hours between flights. Katy met us after midnight and helped us very much. She arranged a taxi for us at 5:20 a.m. We just needed a place to sleep so we didn’t mind that there was no window. We’d go back any time to see Katy.

Near airport so was idea for ongoing travel. Taxis from airport should be no more than $10. Roads around area vey busy at peak times so rental car users be aware . Rosti restaurant for cheap eats and good service

Alujuela was new to us.

Alujuela was new to us. It reminded of a lot of busy placed we've been. The people are very friendly. No one tried to take advantage of us not being able to speak spanish. The traffic was not so nice, but we were happy to see it because that tells you that people are working. So they are making a living and able to take care of their families. We loved the place.

We stayed for the first 2 nights of our trip and the last night before leaving Costa Rica. The hotel staff were lovely and could not have been more helpful. The hotel location is very convenient for the airport and a central place for wandering around Alajuela, finding restaurants, etc. The garden dining area was a pleasant place to relax, and the breakfast was delicious (the best Gallo pinto of our trip).

Very close to the airport. Room was simple but comfortable for an evening arrival for an early morning flight. The staff were very helpful. It’s cheap compared to most of the hotels around. Uber Eats delivers if you don’t fancy the Italian restaurant on site.
