I’m not surprised by the high reviews — the photos show exactly how it is. The place has a calm vibe, great breakfast and coffee, and a garden full of life. The night tour was amazing, with red-eyed and glass frogs. We didn’t see a sloth in the garden but did at Mistico Park and at the hosts’ farm, where we ate fresh rambutans! We didn’t feel like a tourist here but part of the family. Truly memorable stay. Thank you Leo and Rosaura!

The property is lush and tropical attracting all sorts of birds. The rooms have a fabulous view of the volcano and it’s a short drive or longer walk to town. The rooms are cleaned daily. The staff are very helpful and kind. There’s a shared tea / coffee area and pool. Really great value. We loved our stay here.

The place is huge (25~ pools). There were few people and so we had the hotel practically to ourselves due to a problem with their credit card system so you could only pay cash which drove a lot of tourists away. The rooms are very large and well appointed and beds, sheets and pillows are good quality and comfortable. The restaurant food is superb and decently priced. We stayed two nights and enjoyed every second of it. The natural sauna is magic. Loved that the Kids can enjoy the pools all Day without worrying about excess exposure to chlorine because of the natural Spring waters. Water slides and kids pools are also very cool. There are several cold pools to freshen up in and the pools all have different temperatures.

Beautiful property and well maintained. Very peaceful and serene. There are several trails and lagoons to walk around. The bird watching is excellent and I was able to see the Green Macaws! The restaurant is fine dining and excellent food. The cabins are all facing the lagoon and are really private with lots of tropical plants surrounding the cabins. The beds are comfortable.

La Fortuna is very touristy with lots of commercial activities ranging from hiking in the rain forrest to a choice of 6-10 theramal baths, as well as your choice of sloth eco tours, rafting, canyoning, tubing, zip lining, horseback riding and more. There are two rain forrest parks including Mistico with its 16 bridges that we enjoyed. Uber makes getting around easy, as does a rental car. We did both. The Mistico Bridge Park was an excellent place to see the rain forest----which is why we chose Fortuna. We also enjoyed the thermal baths at Baldi. The kids liked the water slides. We also did the Bogain Sloth tour, and a night hike at our hotel that were enjoyable. The kids did whtie water rafting, while the grandparents opted for a float trip. Both were good.

Alajuela is safer than 75% of the neighborhoods in the USA.

Alajuela is safer than 75% of the neighborhoods in the USA. Like every neighborhood on the planet that is next to an airport, Alajuela can be sketchy af. Reminder: It is full of beautiful people who have to put up with the trouble-makers too (mostly harassing travelers about coke, but I assume those same guys would rob you if you act like a jerk or look like a victim at night. **It is NOT Toucan Hostel's fault at all. Toucan Hostel 100% insures the safety of their guests. I have met amazing travelers at Toucan. I loved when the food Truck was there and hope it returns.** I stay at Toucan every time I arrive and leave the country. I go to the bar next door every time and have NEVER had trouble with the locals there. Even on the bar's crazy Karaoke night when all of the OGs are there. Back in the US, I would have been robbed in 2 seconds. The Alajuela locals and thugs know 100% that we guests are staying at Toucan Hostel and we are just passing through. They were all quite cordial to be honest and keep the aggro guys at away. You will be safe on Toucan's street. I walked from Toucan to the Alajuela Wal-Mart multiple times and always take that blocked-off for cars short-cut through that small barrio nearby & never had issues during the day. Be cool and they'll be cool.

Bijagua is a magical place!

Bijagua is a magical place! So full of wildlife, all you can hear is insects and birds singing! There are toucans, aracari, hummingbirds etc absolutely everywhere! There's SO much to do - not just the Rio Claro waterfall in Tenorio national park, but you can stay in wonderful accommodations with their own waterfall / wildlife walks, swim in the blue river outside of the park, hike in the rainforest, go on sloth and wildlife tours, bird-watch, do chocolate and coffee tours, visit the Hummingbird cafe for a meal and/or wildlife tour (a must do!), visit the frog gardens, trek hanging bridges - and all with a tenth of the tourists that descend on La Fortuna. What you ABSOLUTELY MUST DO while you're there, though, is a night-tour at Tapir Valley!! You'll see tapirs so close you can touch them, plus the area is so diverse you can only go a few steps without seeing birds, butterflies, insects, sloths, monkeys (3 kinds), frogs (so many kinds including blue jean/strawberry dart and the famous red eyed dart frogs), lizards, spiders, snakes.. Just GO!!

Our trip was mostly rejuvenation, health and to access the volcano and hot springs. We went to Arenal park and hiked the trail to the Volcano. We saw a Capibara but most other wildlife is best viewed in the early morning. There were a lot of orchids in bloom along the trails. Going to EcoTermales Hotspring was the highlight. It's a gorgeous naturally constructed spa with layered pools, waterfalls all built with stacked granite rockery, bridges and pathways connect the pools, and there's plenty of seating, an open bar that serves the best mixed drinks. The restaurant served fresh healthy assortment of seafood and meats with veggie dishes with dessert at Lunch. The water was fed from the natural hotspring, which was circulated , refreshed constantly with fresh volcanic water. Attention to the holistic elements of nature were throughout. Staff and Service were top notch.

Proximity to Airport!

Proximity to Airport! This facility standards were substandard. My wife hurt her foot on a dangerous doorstop, sewer gas was overwhelming, no hot water, air conditioner was not hooked up, pumping hot air back into the room. The stairs right from ground level were dangerous. English was non existent with staff. They were courteous and helpful. There were no privacy coverings on the windows. Open hole in Bathroom ceiling.

This place was a true home away from home. It is simply beautiful to be amongst the cacao trees, hearing the parrots and toucans and to enjoy the peace and quiet. The host is super friendly and helped us organise two incredible local tours, one of them included a cacao workshop which was so educational but also so much fun- the entire family loved it. The breakfast was also very delicious and abundant and our only regret was that we couldn’t stay longer. We all loved it so much, we well definitely be back!

Nice little place with great restaurant on side and a parking, staff that is very friendly, nice garden and a pool. The beds could be better but room was nice and spacious. This was our second time and will be back. It is a good option for before or after airport night. Only downside is the sound of the airplanes and a construction noise from behind the rooms that starts from early morning.

We found 2 nights before a flight to be perfect, giving us a spare day to putter. We went to the zoo this time. The museum is worth a visit as is the cathedral. Lots of choice for food. It is a very busy city but only 10 minutes from the airport. We also spent about 4 hours at City Mall as our flight was at midnight. There is no place to stash your bags at the airport so we had to keep them with us at the mall.
