The room was clean and comfortable. It included a terrace, which was a lovely place to sit when it was sunny. The location was perfect -- close to everything, yet a little off the main path, so it was quiet. The breakfast was excellent with many choices. The staff was exceptional -- very kind and helpful.

As usual Ibis delivers great value for the money. Clean rooms and really friendly staff. Great breakfast and the overall atmosphere/decor is absolutely top notch for the price point. We regularly use ibis when we travel for my son’s tennis tournaments and the experience is so consistent we never dare change brands. Kudos!

The Glory of the Roman Empire

With arguably the most impressive Roman heritage outside Rome, Nîmes is truly a sight to behold. Its most awe-inspiring structure is the virtually intact Roman amphitheater. The gladiators are long gone, but a matador statue outside gives an idea of its current use, which is most celebrated during the annual Feria.

Another amazing Roman monument is the Maison Carrée, a colonnaded temple. The Temple of Diana is less well preserved, but still maintains some of its arched roof and interior details. The peaceful, surrounding Fontaine Gardens cover the grounds of the former Roman baths and still contain elegant water features.

Speaking of water, the incredible Pont du Gard is a triple-arched Roman aqueduct crossing a river northeast of Nîmes. Other Roman remains include the Tour Magne, and 2 gates that allowed access through the city walls.

The Nîmes Archaeological Museum in the former Jesuit college provides background to this history and also houses the Warrior of Grezan, a pre-Roman statue. Another museum houses a fine arts collection, and the simple cathedral is also worth visiting.

July music festivals interfered with access to the Amphitheatre, and the Jardin de la Fontaine was closed all day to the public though there did not seem to me much of a crowd at the evening event. So no Temple of Diana. The archaeological (Romantic) museum was good, Maison Carree interesting. Restaurants average. Rail corrections good. Did not try buses - there seem to be at least three companies. France has gone crazy with privatisation. Did it learn nothing from Thatcher?

We travel in a bit of a whirl, our son's preference. That said, a day in Nimes as part of a week in the Midi we valued. We stayed in the center and experienced the Roman treasures - the Arenes de Nimes, the Maison Carre', the Museum of Romanity. The Jardin de la Fontaine had some interest but rather little garden. The food was fine, as ever in France; the Columbus Cafe is a beautiful place for breakfast or a snack. Alas, I forgot to note the name of a very lively and excellent restarurant for lunch. The Pont du Gard 32 km away is a must-see/ must-traverse - a 2000-year-old Roman 3-tiered aqueduct in great condition, rather glowing in the late afternoon.

The main sites of interest are contained within a relatively small area. The city pass was a good investment, providing free entry to all of these. There's a good range of places to eat within the same area so everything was easily walkable. The Roman aquaduct, Pont du Gard, was a nice excursion - just a bus ride costing $2 - and with the museum entry again provided by the city pass.

Nimes is a beautiful clean city. Many interesting historical buildings and cultural places to visit. Has a wide selection of Restaurants and Bistros in central Nimes Surrounding the Ampytheatre. Easily accessible if walking.

Nimes more than met our expectations.

Nimes more than met our expectations. We were there for 6 days with day trips to Arles, Avignon and Pont du Gard. Nimes is easily walkable and though there are tourists it never felt overcrowded. The old part of the city is amazing with so much history and incredibly well preserved. And of course the Maison Carree, the amphitheatre are extraordinary. Restaurants and cafes abound. We ate on my husband’s 80th birthday at Menna, an experience worth repeating. Public transport to Arles etc excellent. Also bus ( 4 euros return) to Pont du Gard provided a great opportunity to see a bit of the beautiful Provençal countryside.

The side streets had lots of great small cafes and restaurants. We had superb meails everywhere we ate. The local people were very welcomng anf fiendly. Lots to vists and see, 3 days was just right.

A really cute, clean and well run hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated and comfortable - nothing super fancy or luxurious, but exactly what you'd expect for the reasonable price. We had a little balcony which was nice to sit out on during the evening. The bathroom and bedroom were very clean and well put together. The breakfast was also great - simple, lots of fruit, pastries, cheese and ham, strong coffee, exactly what you need for a day of exploring Nimes. Would definitely come back here.

There was really nothing to complain about. The location of the hotel is very convenient. It is located just next to the main train station, so if you arrive in Nîmes by train, you can reach your accommodation within a 5-minute walk. The main sights (the Arena of Nîmes, for example) can also be reached within 15 minutes. The room was quite spacious for French standards. There were no tea/coffee facilities in the room, but you can grab tea, coffee, or just water in the lobby.

This hotel is very close to Gare de Nimes and to the famous Nimes arena. Its location is perfect, in the middle of old town, But the room is very small and the bathroom is even smaller. Nevertheless, it is good for one or two nights in Nimes for solo travelers or backpackers.
