Good choice of places to eat for lunch and dinner.

Good choice of places to eat for lunch and dinner. Plenty of history with the castle and Tullie museum. Easy to get a bus to explore the wider area. Interesting town centre. Attractive entrance to the town from the station. Good for pedestrians as a lot of pedestrianised areas.

Carlisle is a beautiful, well-kept little city that is a pleasure to be in. It has its challenges with empty shops, (eg around where I think Woolworths used to be), but I think that particular unit is being repurposed (for University?).

Carlisle cathedral and castle are def worth while, having spent a week in the Lake District, it was nice to go to the Vue cinema and do some shopping. Go to Amatos for an Italian meal, excellent food with good service at reasonable price. We drove to and walked at Hadrian's Wall which is within 30 min driving distance.

I am Carlisle born and bred but now live close to Oxford - so I might be a bit biased but Carlisle has some magnificent historical features and is well worth a closer look. Its not quite as glamorous as York or Chester but if you have visited them already try Carlisle with its ancient castle and cathedral and Roman history.

I like carlisle and come here often (live in hexham 1 hour away). There is lots to do; museums, shops, pubs, restaurants and a great big park and river walk that my dog loves. You will get lost in the one way system but thats almost part of the fun. Take the train to Settle and back; beautiful scenery

Carlisle is party central!

Carlisle is party central! We've been before in winter and it was quieter but went at end of June during world cup and it was mega busy. We mainly go for gigs at The Old Fire Station but noticed alot of groups go as plenty of party pubs and cheap alcohol! Lovely place and there's a castle, cathedral too and shopping centre so it can be for non drinkers though if taking kids I'd choose careful as it can get noisy in some hotels with clubs onto early hours.

The hotel is positioned right next to the station. We were walking Hadrian's Wall Path so wanted convenience. We walked straight out of the station into the hotel. We stayed 2 nights and ate at 2 lovely Italian restaurants just nearby. The staff are very friendly (I think Cumbrians/Carlisle folk all are). The room was large, giving us a bit of space to spread out and the breakfast was fine. We took a taxi from outside the hotel to Bowness-on-Solway and walked back to the hotel, that day so it is very conventient.

Flat was spotless on arrival and everything was in place to make our stay comfortable. Claire (the host) put some tea, coffee and milk so we could have a drink and a rest after a long drive. The host checked in on us via text message during the stay to make sure everything was OK. We wanted to find a location in Carlisle so we could visit our daughter instead of going to somewhere like Silloth, or stopping in a hotel and this was the perfect fit. Will book again.

Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were spacious and clean, tea and coffee facilities available in the room. Hotel is in the centre of Carlisle, so ideal for exploring. Its an old building, so a few creaky floors. Not an issue for us. Beds were comfy and warm. Buffet style Breakfast available in the restaurant for a reasonable price. Prebook with room for a better deal.

Whilst a 2 star hotel and a little bit dated, the rooms were comfortable enough, clean, and staff very friendly and helpful. Cheap considering breakfast is also included. Good location within walking distance of city centre
