From the minute we arrived to the minute we left there was a warm inviting atmosphere. The owners and staff were lovely.. The room was well decorated and spotlessly clean. We had all the facilities we required. The bed was comfortable which added to having a good night's sleep. We eat there on both nights as the food was of such good quality and staff were very efficient and friendly.

Newark has the river Trent running through it within the local park with the castle in the background which makes a very interesting find. The town caters for all and has plenty of places to sit and relax and enjoy a hot or cold drink and good food places to try. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay and would recommend to others to visit this little gem in Nottinghamshire.

We went for an afternoon bottomless brunch at the Old Post...

We went for an afternoon bottomless brunch at the Old Post Office which was amazing! Then plenty of pubs/bars in walking distance including the Barge pub on the canal. We then ended up at the Navigation which had live music on - the perfect stay!

The town was very disappointing, no shops bars were empty ,...

The town was very disappointing, no shops bars were empty , the market wasn’t on the day we went but we were talking to a local & she said it’s very disappointing anyway with only a couple of stalls , the town is beautiful but unfortunately looks like it’s got economical problems , we walked home at 8pm we didn’t see a soul in the streets ! Very sad to see

A clean town with friendly residents.

A clean town with friendly residents. This town is small enough to walk around and there is a lovely pathway along the Trent River. The market square was set up with lots of vendor tables, it was a pity we were there too late to visit the market. The town offers a choice of 2 large grocery shops within walking distance (Waitrose and Morrisons) and is serviced by two train stations and a bus terminal. (Was impressed to see you can get from Newark in 75 minutes into Kings Cross, London). We enjoyed a drink at the quirky Barge Restaurant and we were happy to see how dog friendly it is.

Attractive town, historic buildings, River Trent - all...

Attractive town, historic buildings, River Trent - all lovely features; and Sherwood Forest and Rufford Park in easy reach. Newark Civil War Centre is very interesting and there are many old buildings in the town. Independent shops and Sarurday market. Sourhwell Minster is not far away and cities - Lincoln (similarly much historical interest) and Nottingham - are each about 20 miles drive. Good pubs and restaurants too. Koinonia (Kerala food) is a favourite.

We arrived on a Sunday for one night.

We arrived on a Sunday for one night. Many restaurants were closed in the evening. It is an historic location but looks a bit run down with many shops boarded up. We found Tambo Lounge, which as open and provided good food at reasonable prices. Luckily, our B&B (The Lions) was superb and this made up for some of the disappointment.

The wonderful home cooked food and the friendly and exceedingly helpful staff. This is a family business and was so much better than the average chain town hotel. In fact some travellers who were staying opposite in the Travel Lodge came over for breakfast.

The staff were excellent - friendly and attentive. The breakfast was excellent and as the hotel was quiet, cooked to order. The hotel is 10 minutes walk from the town centre, so we'll located for a visit to Newark (which I would also recommend!)
