Winkleigh is a delightful Mid Devon village with plenty of lovely thatched cottages. The village has a P.O. a convenience store, cafe and two nice pubs. We visited the Kings Arms which served excellent beers and food but would recommend booking. We were impressed by the friendly, efficient staff.

Winkleigh is an ancient village mentioned in The Doomsday...

Winkleigh is an ancient village mentioned in The Doomsday Book halfway between Great Torrington and Crediton. It stands on high ground in the centre of Devon away from hustle and bustle. The village church can be seen for some distance on approaching from the south and is well worth a visit. After parking it can be reached on foot from its north and west gates on the flat but there is a flight of steps to the south gate. It has a very restful bell chime, (which didn't disturb our sleep at the chapel). The village square is approached by car via narrow and winding streets lined with original cobb cottages while the outskirts have more very recent builds and wider lanes. Parking can be tricky in the square but worth the effort. This is a village best explored on foot to find the smaller streets and walkways with a stop off for lunch or a coffee at the local cider factory on the outskirts or, in the village, at the pub or cafe. Check opening times. Thursday is the day to have early evening hot ,fresh fish and chips from a mobile van by the excellent Butchers shop in the Square. There is a children's playground nearby and the village webpage has information about the history of the village and what's on and where, such as film night in the Village Hall. Drive to Eggesford to see the church there and/or leave your car there to catch the Tarka Line Train to Barnstaple or Exeter and return later. Explore further afield in Devon by car in any direction from this central hub. See the north and south coasts from here. All Devon can be visited from here. No need to move to another place while you explore. Keen cyclists might even look into travelling from London by train via Exeter to Eggesford and cycling to Winkleigh for a stay.
