Absolutely amazing villa find outside of Jogja. The facilities are extremely clean and well kept. There are no bugs. The room setup is comfortable and refreshing. Every room has direct access to a shared pool. The view is absolutely stunning and rejuvenating. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. They also speak English well if you cannot speak Indonesian. The room service food is absolutely delicious (especially the Soto and mie goreng). The villa is hard to find as it’s in the village in a small back alley but if you are looking for a stay outside of the city, with the intention of relaxing I can’t recommend this villa enough.

A City Fit to Prosper

Yogyakarta represents the Javanese quintessence, the guardian of the island’s traditions, language, culture and arts. Capital of kingdoms and empires since the 8th century, ‘Yogya’ is today the capital of the namesake Sultanate and Special Region of Indonesia.

With ancient origins, the city was during centuries the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, but its power was weakened when the Dutch East India Company started to gain control over the small Javanese kingdoms during the 17th century. After World War II, the Indonesian independence was supported by the Sultan, allowing the monarchy to stay in power. The city became the country’s first capital from 1945 to 1949.

Its name was inspired by the Indian Ramayana epic, with ‘Yogya’ meaning 'suitable, fit’ and ‘karta’ meaning 'prosperous'. Must-see sites include the Kraton Yogyakarta Palace, the Taman Sari Castle, the Alun-Alun Sultan's ground, and the Masjid Gede Kauman Mosque. Jalan Malioboro street is one of the most popular shopping areas, and many hotels in Yogyakarta are located nearby.

Its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan makes this town one of the country’s most popular destinations. Hotels, resorts and homestay accommodation are also available near those areas.

Yogyakarta was a city so filled with culture and history that every day was a new adventure! As a mature woman, I felt totally safe in this city, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the laneways and environs on foot. I did find the traffic challenging, but by avoiding the main roads, I not only escaped the hectic , crowded streets, but became familiar with the charms of urban villages, and got to meet many friendly and helpful locals. I thoroughly recommend this city !

I enjoyed the walkability of the city. 15-20 minutes walking from the hotel put me right in the shopping areas. Although the traffic was busy, crossing the streets was very manageable. The Malioboro shopping area offered great finds in clothing, food, and souvenirs. Although my husband and I enjoyed our time in Jogja, we became a bit annoyed by two individuals who tried to push us to buy Batik paintings. It felt like a bait and swith when we went to the Sultan's palace and then became redirected to a Batik school by someone claiming to be with the ministry of tourism. This did not taint our view of Jogja since most major cities have some aspect of this.

Many places to visit. Museums. Malioboro Street similar to the Bukit Bintang in Malaysia. Malls. Candi (temples). Borobudur is must visit place. I personally liked the art legend Pak Affandi's Museum.

Getting around from our hotel was a bit far.

Getting around from our hotel was a bit far. Borobudur Temple was amazing- definitely do the sunrise experience. Local food was tasty, and we enjoyed the Malioboro area for our teenagers. Cave repelling, tubing, and swimming were fantastic adventures. The local people of yogyakarta were very welcoming.

not much to do beside visiting the temples in the vicinity, and the few restaurants in the touristy area. nobody walks, everybody is motorized, crossing the street is an adventure, you'll feel like hiring a taxi just to take you to the other side.

Yogyakarta was an interesting city to explore. Very easy to get around by taxi. However not easy to venture out for a walk as the traffic was busy and not a lot of walking space on the narrow footpaths. The pollution in the air varies day to day. The city being inland doesn’t seem to get the breezes to blow away the smog.
