What an amazing, fortunate and unexpected find! Driving along the coast from Puglia to Calabria we weren’t impressed by much in the seaside towns we passed along the way. Booked the Convento from the car and from the moment we turned off the road towards the charming hillside town of Calopezzati we were enchanted. The property is stunning, with incredible views, large and well appointed rooms. A complete ruin, the convent was lovingly renovated by the family in the 1970’s as their private residence, but now opened to guests — staying there feels like you’re visiting friends, not staying in a hotel. Sitting in the garden over a sumptuous breakfast or having a delicious home-cooked dinner, we felt like we stepped into a movie of Italy during the dolce vita days. And you’re steps from the very charming and completely unspoilt village, where there is only one, luckily surprisingly good, restaurant. We loved it so much we stopped for a second night on our way home to Puglia. I’m telling all my friends. It’s the best!

Located on a charming staircase street in the hill town of Rossano. To park, enter Rossano, take a right off Piazza Sant'Anargiri, drive up the 2 hairpin turns on Via Martucci, and park in front of the Byzantine Institute. The location is great for access to the beach or surrounding region, in particular the Byzantine monastery at Patire and the ancient Bruttian city as Castiglione di Paludi with its impressive East Gate. Franco, the host, is next-level. He bakes the cornetti fresh every morning, and the breakfast is served in the garden with plentiful juice, caffe latte, rusks and jam, and yogurt. The room and bathroom are clean, comfortable, and a welcome sight at the end of a long day. The building is historic, and the WiFi is great.
