First of all - private onsen is an amazing experience if you look for more privacy - we spent hours inside. Second - what booking doesn't tell you - dinner is actually a multiple course Michelin - like experience, changed every day to different courses. We had many delicious plates that we tried for the first time. Breakfast has both japanese and western options, both really tasty as well. And last but not least - the hotel provides transport to the nearest stations (bus/train/rope) from which, especially with Hakone pass, you can explore the whole area. And of course the service is top quality. Definitely worth the price

It was exactly as in the photos, a book-lover’s dream, so peaceful and serene. The armchairs were comfortable and perfect for reading. The private onsen was great. I was afraid the outdoor shower would feel too cold (we’re from the tropics), but it was fine. The food was delicious, both dinner and breakfast. I appreciated the explanations given for the 10-course dinner. The servings may seem small but it was just right for a tasting menu and was filling. And I must repeat that the food was really good. I also appreciated the help provided to us to get a taxi to go to Gotemba (we had big luggages and I was recovering from a sprained ankle). It wasn’t easy to get taxis, but they kept trying and were able to get one for us. There was also a nice shop with artisan goods among books and writing paraphernalia.

The whole Hakone area was a hidden gem.

The whole Hakone area was a hidden gem. This was my 5th trip to Japan and I was just discovering this wonderful little area. Purchase a travel pass that works for the ropeway, cable cars, trains, buses and "pirate" ships. We could have spent a couple of more days in the area, rather than our 2 days.

Hakone is a beautifully lush and green pocket of paradise...

Hakone is a beautifully lush and green pocket of paradise with majestic views of the surrounding mountains. For anyone who loves nature, this is the place to be! I stayed for 4 days and could have stayed longer as there were other places I would have loved to visit. I highly recommend getting the Free Pass as it allows for saving a ton of money on buses - the farther you travel, the higher the fare (mine would have been close to $10 CAD for every bus ride). It was also a lot of fun exploring the other modes of transportation offered: pirate cruise, ropeway, and cable car! Some top places I recommend to others are Gora Park, the Venetian Glass Museum, and the Botanical Garden of Wetlands. I hope to return one day to see everything else on my list and to treat myself to a wonderful ryokan experience again!

The full experience of transportation to take in all the scenery made it a memorable day as the temperature was 35 + during our stay. The Temple by the lake is worth the walk and steps. Keep to the left side as you walk along the shore line and the hidden path takes you to the Torrie gate in the lake then take the steps to the temple

Lake Ashi was beautiful... and we lucked out, despite the cloud cover most of the time, and were able to see the top of Mt. Fuji when we took one of the sight seeing schooners. Also, it's a very quick getaway from Tokyo - 35 min. from Tokyo Station to Odawara! Then about an hour's shuttle to the Lake and hotel.

The experience of using the Hakone Free Pass was excellent...

The experience of using the Hakone Free Pass was excellent as it enabled us to visit all key destinations in comfort, in our own time. There was a great variety of destinations. I especially loved the Hakone Open Air Museum and the Pola Museum as well as the Ropeway over the volcano and down to the Lake.

Wonderful little getaway ryokan. Room was spacious with a lounge and a massage chair. The massage chair was the best after walking all day. The private onsen on the balcony was a delight. The dinner and breakfast meals were amazing and delicious. They had free flowing drinks. There’s also free coffee machine in the lobby plus a free alcohol station on the third floor. The staff were wonderful. There’s also a bus that takes you to the hotel from Hakone-Yumoto station for $2. It’s great when it was raining.

The hotel is in a fab location, 2 minutes from the train station. The room is authentic and really comfortable and clean. The breakfast and dinner are served in a private dining room, are delicious if you like Japanese food! - and we thought great value for money. The private Onsen is an experience as is the open air bath if you book that room. We would really recommend. Make sure you are hungry for breakfast and dinner! Hakone pass is gpod value fo r money.

Buffet was good and varied, Onsen was nice, clean and good facilities for storage. Lots of drinks machines and a lovely lounge area. We played cards in the lounge after dinner. We had a lovely welcome and our bags, which we had forwarded from Tokyo had arrived in our room. Beds were large and comfortable and a lovely shower. Staff were really helpful and the hotel is perfectly located for the Hakone Open Air Sculpture Park and Gora Brewery !

We stayed at Hotel Okada and chose a room with a private onsen, which was a highlight of our stay. The room itself was quite spacious compared to other hotels we visited in Japan, and we appreciated the comfort and privacy it offered. Hakone itself is stunning and we truly enjoyed the area, but based on this experience, we’re not likely to book this hotel again.

This place exceeded our expectations. We got a ryokan style room that allowed us to have a truly Japanese experience. The hotel is quiet, authentic and has a nice onsen that we enjoyed very much. Also, the location is great, 10 mins walk from Kowakidani station on the Tenzan line, and close to some restaurants and museums. Excellent base to explore Hakone.
