This was my first time in Lamu and i loved this hotel, it was in the middle of lamu town and very convinient to walk about and see the town, it was also right at the sea front and close to the jetty so we were able to easily catch boats to the other islands. This place is very beautiful, the antique decor was breath taking and intentional. I would highly recommend!

Gorgeous house with amazing swahili flair, lovely hosts. Seems like they contribute to the Lamu community in a big way, they are well known and loved with everyone I spoke to. Hotel staff will help you organize any outing you‘d like, I can recommend Dhow trips, but they also help with other activities (plus reasonable pricing recommendations). Eco friendly facilities and the breakfast is amazing with ingredients sourced almost exclusively from their own Lamu farm.

A fantastic 3 nights at Gaba Gaba house with Tommy and Abdalla. A beautifully decorated, impeccably kept house. Tommy is an excellent chef — his meals were sublime - and Abdalla organized everything perfectly. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

If you've never been to Lamu bear in mind that it is an island, relatively far from Kenya's main infrastructure. The good news is that there is a lovely airport and most of the hotels and houses will arrange passage on a boat from the airport, which sits on an island opposite. If you're a sensitive creature or an American unused to places that are not suburbs then Lamu may be a bit much for you. You walk everywhere, unless you take a boat. The island brims with history, being one of the centers of Swahili culture, with close ties to Oman and India. You can disregard the usual standard hysterical State Department warnings about Lamu. If something bad happens there, it could happen anywhere in Kenya, and Kenya is much safer than most State bulletins make out. Walk the Old Town. Chat with people. Don't get annoyed by the people trying to offer tours and such. Say no politely and they melt away. If they try again say, hapana (NO in Swahili), and smile. Eat the meat samosas, fish and lobster. Those are the mainstays of local food. Lamu House, where we stayed, had very nice breakfasts with surprisingly good coffee! I'd go for a week or two for your first time. Do keep in mind that there are two Lamus-- the UNESCO World Heritage town and the resorts on various islands. I don't know anything about the resorts except Peponi Hotel. It's at the far end of the island, about a 10-15 minute boat ride from the Old Town. Go to the main restaurant by boat one evening. Enjoy the glorious sight of the island slipping by and the vast Indian Ocean sky overhead. Order the most fabulous chicken biriyani you will EVER eat. It's also a very attractive hotel.

Lamu is a very unique place, but not a great place for solo women travellers - you will get a looot of unwanted attention and your personal space will be invaded constantly unless you are walking with a tour guide/ local. Most tourists seems to also spend very little time in Lamu town, but rather hang out in Shela or Manda

How everything has been preserved . Loveeed my stay in Shela …. Sadly they hardly eat pepper there so if you like heat like Africans . Bring yours . Abu gives the best tour guild as well as Kasime . Kasime gives the best sunset boat sailing . You can ask for both of them at the Lamu house

Lamu is a bohemian hipster paradise, with a culture that’s 100 driven by locals. It’s a perfect slice of heaven on earth. Lamu town is great for history of the island and its people, Shela has a lot more shopping and food options. Shela beach was my favourite for swimming, super clean and no crowds at all for miles. Sunset and Majlis resort was top!

Fascinating town - loved strolling the streets observing the daily activities of local life. Good local restaurants and nice fresh food market. Some gem locations for nice coffee and local crafts if you hunt around. Further afield the Flip Flop Project was interesting and of course dhow sailing sunset cruise with Cpt Moroko is a must.

A very nice place in a quiet location in Shela with a short walk to waterfront, restaurants and the most perfect sandy beach you can imagine. The rooms are tastefully decorated and theres a fridge for keeping drinks cool. A wonderful roof terrace with shade during the day and a lovely breeze on warm evenings and nights. The owner Abdo is very kind and serviceminded and can help organising anything you want at reasonable prices. We went for a wonderful sunset dhow cruise. We will definitely come back.
