Vila do Conde — my first visit, and what a pleasant surprise...

Vila do Conde — my first visit, and what a pleasant surprise. I was amazed by the beautiful view along the river, with the Nau/wooden ship and the Santa Clara Monastery in the background — truly breathtaking. I didn’t know the city beforehand, but I immediately loved its architecture — no tall buildings blocking the views, and a beautifully preserved historic area along the river. It’s quiet, with almost no car traffic, and there are plenty of parking spaces both in the city and near the stunning beaches. There are lovely walking and biking lanes along the river and the coastline, making it easy to enjoy the surroundings. The city also has good restaurants. I especially enjoyed visiting the Santa Clara Monastery, the Aqueduct, the Alfândega Museum, and the Nau ship. Vila do Conde is a very pleasant, well‑managed city where you can truly relax and appreciate everything around you.

I was passing through on the Camino, so didn't spend much time looking around, but there's a fair bit to explore - the museum and galleon, the fort, the convent turned hotel and, I suspect a few more bars and restaurants.

Not really a lot there.

Not really a lot there. There was nothing along the beachfront other than a few cafes. The concrete buildings were uninviting. However, if you are prepared to walk in the other direction, there is the official Camino path, all on boardwalks in the direction of Porto, which takes you along the beautiful coastline. The town is supported by two Metro stations which have good links to Porto and other lovely Portuguese towns. Would recommend a trip to Angeiras if you want locally-caught fish/sardines.

Vila do Conde is a charming town that is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of a large city, if that is what you are used to, or looking to get away from. There are many good restaurants in the area. We hired a car for the duration of our stay as we wanted to travel further afield whilst adding stops along the way and choosing the most scenic routes.

Such an interesting town, the tourist information office was a revaluation with such a knowledgeable lady who spoke perfect English. The history of the town is so interesting to a retired boat builder who loved all the old photos and the Custom House. The people we met were all very friendly and helpful, everyone spoke English and tried to teach us a little Portuguese. The Lace museum is beautiful, unfortunately the ladies were not demonstrating when I visited but the old film showing lace being made, especially by such young children, was very interesting. A town to visit again.

Booked for a week for a family wedding. Location was away from the main area of Vila do Conde which suited us. 10 min walk to Metro which takes you to Porto or Pavoa de Varzim. Nice stretch of beach at the bottom of the road.

The room was beautiful, well designed and cozy. The hotel is right on the riverside, so the views are gorgeous. The bed was enormous and amazingly comfortable. There was a kettle and fruit and snacks right outside the door.
