United StatesRoom was comfortable and spacious. The location is peaceful and charming. Breakfast was very good, especially the coffee. The staff were amazing. The registration office and the breakfast area are delightful. You can walk down by the river in the hotel grounds. Loved it.

United StatesIf you're looking for a secluded, rustic getaway, then this is a great place to stay. (And if you're not - why are you in Chama?)
Our room was clean and had the conveniences we needed for our one night stay. Beds were comfortable and the area is very quiet - almost scarily so for two "city" girls. We enjoyed walking around the property and spotted a few deer roaming. There's also a decent restaurant right next door.

The town itself is "historic", meaning that whatever used to...
The town itself is "historic", meaning that whatever used to be the reason for its existence (mining support), no longer exists. Which is sad. Lots of businesses shuttered and lots of the revitalization efforts are themselves "historic" - meaning, they didn't work.
On the other hand the railroad - adjacent to Sterling & Sage - is quaint and fun. A really fun thing to do for families, history buffs, railroad buffs, or "guys who just like cool things that work."
Trying to draw newcomers to Chama for purposes of settling there, would be a hard sell. But for a fun visit it's fine. Spend a couple days for fun, or on your way through on a driving trip through the West - you'll love it.
There is a back way to get to Chama (from Albuquerque) that involves taking US-550N, NM-96E, NM-112N, and US-84W that is amazing. Spectacular vistas one after the other and a cool dam crossing. Some dirt road so skip this back route if you're a woosie or lame.

The train ride was terrific, more so because of the fall...
The train ride was terrific, more so because of the fall colors from the aspen trees. We had breakfast at Fina's which is a Great little mom and pop place. Reasonable prices and very good food with a Mexican flair. Dinner was at the Iron Rail Inn which is a great place to eat and offers hotel rooms also, They were booked up when we got there. Good menu, good bar and nice ambience. Definitely would stay there and also eat there on a future trip.

Our main goal for this 3 day/2 night trip was to enjoy the changing of deciduous leaf color in autumn. Scenery, particularly several miles north of town, was gorgeous with the autumn aspen leaves looking like gold coins dangling from invisible strings hanging from branches as the breeze blew by with the background of evergreen trees. Many restaurants were closed (perhaps due to being weekdays after summer season?), especially at supper time.

We were in Chama in early October, Thursday evening through Saturday morning. Disappointingly, most of the restaurants were closed on Thursday evening. We rode the Cumbres Toltec Railroad, which is a must do, but not much else to do in Chama.

The Cumbres Toltec historic train is a wonderful excursion -- includes a delicious lunch. We found eating places in Chama willing to accomodate special dietary needs. This little town, high in the mountains of northern New Mexico is one of the state's gems.

Chama is wonderful if you like to fish, hunt, snowshoe and other outdoor activities. And I need to definitely add the train. Not at all "touristy" and amenities are limited. Somewhat rustic.

A very well presented and well furnished room. A beautiful and very spacious bathroom, terrific shower. The bedroom had a huge bed, loads of pillows and a very warm duvet. Very good facilities in a great location right next th Chama railway station. Lots of character in the bedroom, a great place to stay and sitting outside on the balcony was really nice in the evening.

Nice comfortable room with good beds. People who work there are very friendly. Facilities and atmosphere are nice- my kids met a big group of people playing volleyball on the hotel's court and had a really fun evening meeting new people.
