FAQs about hotels in Reno

A Less Outrageous Vegas

In many respects Reno is a less outlandish version of its Nevada cousin Las Vegas. Within minutes of landing at Reno-Tahoe Airport you can be hearing the dinging of slot machines on Virginia Street where a glowing neon arch welcomes you to ‘The Biggest Little City in the World’.

Across the plaza is Harrah’s Reno, just one casino hotel available on Booking.com. Larger casinos with spas, such as Peppermill and Atlantis, are off the main strip. The largest is the Grand Sierra Resort with its own amusement park, large pool and night club. Pet-friendly motels and cheap hostels are other options.

Aside from gambling, the city hosts many events including the Reno River Festival in Wingfield Park. The Truckee River Walk connects shops, restaurants and bars popular with students at the nearby University of Nevada, the state’s oldest. The campus includes the Mackay Stadium and Fleischmann Science Center and Planetarium, set opposite the arboretum of Rancho San Rafael Park.

The Nevada Museum of Art is in Reno and neighbouring Sparks has a Heritage Museum. The 2 cities share a convention centre and livestock events centre, and there are many golf courses in their green surroundings. Even lusher are the Sierra Nevada mountains, whose peaks around Lake Tahoe offer some of the best US skiing.

Reno is a great jumping off point for the rest of Northern Nevada as well destination for top notch western hospitality that is not Las Vegas yet has that pallet of offerings. I enjoy my time in Reno because I know the town and what it has to offer, which is worth a few nights or years depending on your tastes.

One day to see how the Reno I left in 1976 has changed was enough. I always thought I would like to return, but it is gone. It's my sadness that I let it escape but what can we do as time goes by. The Silver Spur Casino built by the town's "Cansino's employees in 1967 as a Cansino for the employees" never took hold and it became just and another tourist trap, and heaven forbid, a curio shop today. Who could expect the 24-hour 49¢ Ham and Eggs and Tuesday Night $1.95 Prime-rib Dinner to still be there? C'est la vie.

We generally do not like Reno, especially the congestion with traffic and people. We are not gamblers but we did thoroughly enjoy dinner at La Strada in the El Dorado. I think the jewel of Reno is the River Walk area. It is so professionally done, lovely to stroll on the path that can take you 114 miles! It has fascinating history and some nice greenery. I visit Reno only to see my family who live in the area. Summer weather is wonderful. It can get quite hot but the mornings and even the afternoons are superb!

This was an easy overnight stop on a road trip and the price was right. We're not big fans of casinos, but did spend a little time at the slot machines and had some cocktails at the bar. It was pleasant, but a few hours was enough for us.

If you want to gamble, it's all in the downtown area.

If you want to gamble, it's all in the downtown area. I'd recommend staying near the 'Mid-Town' area a mile-ish south of downtown, on Virginia. It's the cool local hangout place, with restaurants and cafes. There are also some places to go for hikes or walks, like Rancho San Rafael Park (north part of hiking, running, mountain baking, south part for Arboretum). But other places too. The farther south you go on Virginia (which is kind of the main north/south road) the more 'normal' stuff you find. I didn't get to hear/see any live music, but it seems there is some. Anyways, stuff to do even if you don't want to gamble. Oh: the Nevada Museum of Art is worth a visit if you're into art at all.

The bridges across the Truckee River were being updated so walking along the river was not as enjoyable. I would like to come back after they are done. The casinos and restaurants are awesome. The airport shuttle was great. We did not have a car and used the local transit several times.
