Surfin’ USA in Bohemian CA

Santa Cruz was surf central California long before the Beach Boys sang about it. The Surfing Museum in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse tells stories of those who have braved some of the world’s best waves.

Overlooking the ocean rollers are the Coconut Grove Ballroom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk - the oldest amusement park in the state of CA, and the last original one on the West Coast. Its historic carousel, rollercoasters and rides are a colourful backdrop to Cowell’s Beach, best viewed from the Sky Glider cable cars.

Jutting into Monterey Bay is the wharf where sea lions bask and pelicans decide on their next meal. Seafood restaurants are abundant here and the bars provide lively nightlife. Pacific Avenue is the main shopping area and one street away is the Museum of Art & History.

Unsurprisingly for a surfer hotspot, the city has a liberal outlook and is known for political activism - a far cry from the era when the Santa Cruz Mission was established. The mission is now a state park alongside Natural Bridges Beach and the Big Basin Redwoods in forested hills behind the city, home to the gravity-defying Mystery Spot.

Santa Cruz is beautiful and a must see if you 've never been. My hubby and I walked to the boardwalk and enjoyed everything it has to offer. The food at Stagnaro Bros was tasty but we again a little disappointed because my hubby ordered crab and they didn't have it because it wasn't in season.

Our favorite spots were The Beach Boardwalk, the wharf, visiting UCSC, West Cliff Dr. & Natural Bridges Beach, Pacific Ave. We ate at the Market off of Front Street that had lots of choices (Japanese, Puerto Rican, pizza, burgers, Indian, vegetarian, and Venezuelan food) and there was live jazz too! We got ice cream at Penny Ice Creamery (highly recommend their toasted mashmallow fluff as a topping!) We were able to walk around a lot from our hotel (Hyatt Place Santa Cruz). We definitely could have stayed longer and explored more beaches, gone to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, and done a day trip to Monterey for whale watching or visit to the aquarium. Lots to do and see in the area and great food choices available!

If you don't mind crowds than summer will work for all but...

If you don't mind crowds than summer will work for all but if you want a little more privacy than the best time to go is when the kiddos are still in school. We also went to visit Capitola which also has great beaches and excellent restaurants. The whole experience was perfect.

Santa Cruz is a wonderful place to visit (and live!).

Santa Cruz is a wonderful place to visit (and live!). There are a lot of hiking trails and beaches. There are many restaurants to choose from along with dessert places and acai bowl places to try. The Mystery Spot is a fun 30-40 min. adventure during the day, with perhaps the Boardwalk in the evening? Pizza My Heart is a yummy and easy when traveling with kids - and who doesn't like a $9 shirt with a slice of pizza for free.

Many High School days spent surfing in Santa Cruz, it's a great place to visit, but because it's so popular road in and out can be an issue with traffic. Lots to see and do, USCS has a great visitor area. You can see wales from the pier when they are in.

Amanda did a GREAT getting me the best rom possible at a terrific rate. The two-room accomodation included a master bedroom with large HD TV and a sitting room with fireplace, another big srceen TV, bar, and comfortable couch and leather chairs. The Inn also has a terrific restaurant/sports bar on site! Aloso, the location is etremely handy, right where Highway 17 meets Highway 1 as I entered SAnta Cruz. I will defiitely be back.
