I've been going to the Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge...

I've been going to the Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge every January or February for over 20 years to commune with the snow geese and the sandhill cranes, and Socorro is the closest town with a decent choice of accommodations. Unfortunately, restaurant options are limited: All of my old favorites have closed (sniffle), so it's either Yo' Mama's (which has a pretty good variety of food, but closes a couple of days a week), El Camino (your basic diner), or any of several decent Mom-and-Pop Mexican restaurants. (The Owl Cafe, which has the best green chile cheeseburger in NM, IMHO, is 8 miles away in the village of San Antonio near the Bosque.) The New Mexico Tech campus has an interesting mineral museum (it started out as NM School of Mines, hence the big lighted "M" on the mountain behind it), but, other than campus activities, there isn't a whole lot going on in town.

Location was excellent. We were on our way from the Petrified Forest, Arizona to our next stop in Alamagordo, New Mexico and found Socorro a small, quiet town that was ideal for us as we didn't want to drive until the next day. The hotel is already quite old and basic but staff were very helpful and accommodating - loved that most about our stay.
