Beautiful property and the host was amazing. He was so nice and gave amazing recommendations. He called a restaurant to make a reservation for which he recommended and it was one of the best yakiniku places we’ve been to. We also went out to a karaoke bar with him and we had a great time! It was a nice property but the host made the experience even better!

It was clean, spacious, equipped. There were washing machine, dryer, microwave, oven, barbecue materials, barbecue setting, kitchen utensils, cooking equipments, fridge, even printer and Gomoku/Weiqi setting. I was impressed. Very beautiful, traditional Japanese styled. The host Keiko is very passionate, helpful and nice. She drove me from station to the guest house and even spent her time to accompany me to see Nara. We spent wonderful time together. Amazing place, host and trip. As a solo traveller, I enjoy the guest house very much, but it would also be a perfect place for group travelling since the guest house has common areas for fun, barbecue and cooking. It would be so nice if you travel in group and spend a couple of days here, with only one day I didn’t think I had explored Nara enough. Nara is also a good place to take a break and chill if you don’t have a packed schedule.

The owners are so lovely, it was a really nice experience. I had just finished a 3 day hike and was exhausted so the mum made me a delicious Bento box for dinner. The living space is very spacious and light, it felt very relaxing in there. The communal kitchen and bathroom area is also very spacious and has everything you would need.

This is an excellent Ryokan, not too far from Nara and on the way to Yoshino. The hosts are extremely friendly and will provide you, if you wish, with a Japanese dinner (seafood based) and either a Japanese or Western breakfast - both incur an additional cost. You can also self cater. The place caters for just one set of guests at a time. You have a main room with a table, piano, TV and WiFi, and a room for sleeping in. You leave these rooms to go to the toilet and kitchen area. Shower and bath is around the other side of the building. The house is quite old and is therefore cold overall, however, within your rooms there heaters which keep it very cosy and there are heating mats for the beds. Book here to enjoy a stay in a traditional Japanese house! You can also request a pickup from the train station.

This is an unmanned facility so don’t be put off by the staff score. Nara is easily walkable and this hotel being located so near the train station is a huge plus.

The service is top notch, super kind lady who gave us a tour and recommended some great local spots for food and things to do up north in Nara. Really nice hostel for a great price. I'm writing this review from an awesome hammock in the common area, highly recommend.

This was a beautifully kept room in a homey guesthouse. This was my only experience at a ryokan, staying at a string of hotels in the rest of my stay, and the quiet, private and genial hospitality was a delightful change.

Very nice to stay in such a traditional hostel! It was a bit noisy because of that, (they use traditional dividers for the rooms), but everyone was very mindful to stay quiet at night! Staff was nice! And the lay out of the public area’s made the hostel unexpectedly sociable (definitely try the sake tasting if you get the chance!).

It's a charming old house which is well-maintained and really makes you feel you are in Japan...even to a courtyard garden. The location was easy to get to either by walking from the station (15 minutes) or by bus (5 minutes), but was in a quiet and traditional part of Nara that turned out to be part of the pleasure (since, unlike most of Kyoto, Nara had retained its charm in the last half-century). We wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Wonderfully charming and erudite host in Mr. Anzai. Beautiful 110 year old house once a calligraphy school. Many artifacts to admire. Good location short walk to wandering streets near Nara Park.

You're made to feel welcome as soon as you step through the door. Hiroko and Dane were great hosts and the place provided us with everything we needed, including a nice breakfast. We got a lift to the train station when we were leaving as it was raining - a very nice gesture.

We had such an amazing time at Machiya no Yado Gu! The house gave us the feeling of traditional Japan, while being kitted out with all the modern amenities we could have wished for. Spacious, quiet, tastefully designed - and an unbeatable location a stone’s throw away from Nara park. Best of all, we had one of the most incredible hosts we’ve ever encountered. He went out of his way to generously help us every step of the way. Even drove us to the train station on his actual birthday! Can’t wait to be back!
