Mark The Hatter O'Carrigan
The Hideout Cave and Lodge property has been hand-built by Mark, the resident Hatter. This private property transects a deep mountain gorge with panoramic views across World Heritage Area. Set amidst towering escarpments, the Hat Cave is a huge sandstone cathedral, sculpted by nature to provide an ideal bushland retreat. The Cave and Lodge Accommodation is provided for exclusive use for group bookings. It has been carefully developed using minimal impact construction and facilities to ensure the environment remains as pristine as possible for future generations to enjoy. The cave shelter has a 25 metre high arched opening, faces north west with wind and weather protection by a grove of coachwood trees and 30 metre tall carved rock columns known locally as "pagodas", a predominant feature in the primitive landscape. Access for guests is via a private 500m walking track with numerous seats to relax and absorb the bushland surrounds. Walking back up the hill is a cardio workout, equivalent to walking up a 25 storey building. Some agility is required.
Why MARK the HATTER? The MacQuarie dictionary defines hatter as 1- a maker of hats (which he was as a leather craftsman for over 20 years) 2- a solitary bush dweller (which he is) 3- a tin miner (which he isn't) As soon as you make one hat, people ask "are you a mad hatter?" Well....you can decide that for yourself, but it has left an open door for Mark to express his creativity and eccentricity in all pursuits. His personal ambition became one of building his own home and making a living with his hands and mind while being self-sufficient. He claims "A good home is like a good hat. It must be comfortable and stylish, sit lightly, keep off the elements and be affordable." Mark has welcomed guests to Hatter's Hideout Cave & Lodge for 30 years.
Located on the less visited "wild-side" of the Blue Mountains, Monkey Creek is central to many major attractions yet isolated enough for your privacy. Within 15 minutes are the townships of Mt Victoria, Blackheath and Lithgow offering a variety of places to dine from cafes and pubs to elegant restaurants. There are several spectacular walks within a 10 minute drive... some of my favorites are: The Glow Worm Tunnel, Hassans Walls, Pierces Pass, Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine. Mountain biking is popular and well catered for in the area. The Newnes Plateau and Wollangambe areas are famous for bushwalking and canyoning.
