Oatlands, Tasmania, is a charming heritage town nestled along the historic Heritage Highway. As one of Tasmania’s oldest colonial settlements, it boasts more than 150 beautifully preserved sandstone buildings that line its picturesque streets. The town’s impressive Georgian architecture from the 1800s has been thoughtfully revitalised and now houses cosy cafés, antique stores, galleries, and boutique accommodation, offering visitors a unique blend of history and modern comfort. Robinson Cottage stands as a testament to this rich past. The land was granted to local entrepreneur John Robinson in 1836, and he initially built a comfortable weatherboard dwelling known as Robinson Cottage. By the 1870s, the property had evolved, with shops added to either side of the original home. On the southern (left) side was John Barwick, Saddler & Harness Maker—now home to Studio Room—while the northern (right) side housed a chemist shop operated by F.S. Drake, now beautifully refurbished as The Imbibers Tea House and Wine Bar. At the rear of the original structure, a sandstone room was later added—believed to have served as a kitchen, as evidenced by the remains of a brick baker’s oven, now concealed behind a later fireplace. This space is now known as the Barwick Room, named after William Barwick, a local publican and storekeeper who purchased the property following John Robinson’s death in 1876. Today, visitors can relax and unwind at The Imbibers, open Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 2pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am until late, and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. This quaint wine bar offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, where exposed brick walls and timber beams blend seamlessly with contemporary touches. The Imbibers is the perfect place to settle in for a leisurely afternoon, showcasing an excellent selection of Tasmanian wines and spirits, complemented by delicious grazing platters and small plates—an ideal way to experience the flavours of the region.
Explore Oatlands Discover Tasmania's Best Preserved Georgian Town Nestled in the heart of Tasmania's Midlands, Oatlands is one of Australia's finest heritage towns. With over 150 beautifully preserved Georgian sandstone buildings, it offers a unique blend of colonial history, country hospitality and natural beauty. Callington Mill, built in 1837, is Oatlands' iconic landmark and one of the few working Lincolnshire tower mills in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore the historic mill precinct and experience Tasmania's rich milling heritage. Visit the Military Precinct, including the 1828 Commissariat and the 1829 Supreme Court House, to discover Oatlands' important role in colonial Tasmania and why it was once considered as a possible capital of Van Diemen's Land. Collect a free Oatlands Key from participating businesses to access the Commissariat, Supreme Court House and the 1836 Gaoler's Residence. Pick up a self-guided walking map to explore the town's heritage buildings, historic churches, galleries and boutique shops at your own pace. History lovers can also visit the Oatlands District Historical Society, where displays of photographs, artefacts and local stories bring the town's past to life. For outdoor enthusiasts, enjoy a round at one of Australia's oldest public nine-hole golf courses, established in 1902. Walk or cycle through the historic streets, hire a bike from Callington Mill, or relax at Lake Dulverton. The lake features scenic walking tracks, excellent birdwatching, picnic and barbecue facilities, and peaceful fishing spots surrounded by beautiful Tasmanian countryside. Whether you're visiting for a day or staying a little longer, Oatlands offers an unforgettable mix of heritage, history, nature and country charm.
