Matilda's is a hostal with character, for travellers who know how to enjoy themselves and choose Segovia to do it. Seven rooms, each with its own name and story — and here the names are literal: from the Acueducto room you see the Roman aqueduct, the same one that has stood there for 2,000 years and will still be standing when there's no trace left of us. And from the Catedral room you see the Cathedral: breakfast with a 16th-century monument as your backdrop, with the aqueduct and the Alcázar completing the picture. Roma, Venecia, Murano, Fuencisla and Matilda's complete the house. All rooms have a window, a 135 cm bed, and sheets and towels included. Matilda's sits on a quiet street in a neighbourhood of real Segovians, ten minutes' walk from the Aqueduct. That's the best possible combination: you sleep in the real Segovia and have breakfast in the monumental one. Very close by is the José Zorrilla area, where the locals go for tapas — bars and set menus at neighbour prices, not tourist prices. And on your way to the centre, the Roman Aqueduct welcomes you: the gateway to everything else — the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the old Jewish quarter and the Alcázar, that castle that looks hand-drawn and inspired Disney. Segovia is a city for eating slowly: roast suckling pig, La Granja butter beans and ponche segoviano in the traditional mesones. Book a table if you come on a weekend — Segovians eat out too. Getting here is easy: from the high-speed AVE station (27 minutes from Madrid), bus line 11 drops you next to the Aqueduct, and from there it's a ten-minute stroll through the historic centre to the hostal. If you come by car, you can park on the hostal's own street or the ones nearby, free of charge. Our house tip: get up early one day to see the Aqueduct without crowds, and go up to the Alcázar viewpoint at sunset. Those are the two moments when Segovia shows off — and rightly so.
