My German husband Jörg and I (Claire, French/American) were married at the church in Ciboure and celebrated our wedding at Aita Baita. I was raised spending most vacations of my life here in Ciboure and Jörg and I have done the same with our children. All three kids learned to swim here at the beach and continue to travel home with friends from all over the world. We are an international family, who, having lived in several countries, are blessed to have Aita Baita as a home basis. We love every season here, enjoying the French, Basque and Spanish food, endless hiking opportunities, relaxing at the beach and in the garden, and ever further discovering the area. We are excited about living here for good year-round now and sharing our home with you!

Our home, Aita Baita, has had its name since 1639 when the original section was built as a farmhouse. It is located in the oldest part of Ciboure on the Basque coast, and is listed in a protected area. On one side of Ciboure is the port and the beach, and on the other, the Pyrenees mountains. We have successfully maintained the charm of the classic house, as I experienced it growing up, while recently adding many amenities of the 21st century, including air conditioning on the top floor, WiFi, an elevator, a parking area, and a bathroom for every bedroom! I am the fifth in line to inherit the house since it was bought in 1905.

Aita Baita is just a 10-minute walk from the small Ciboure beach and port. The larger St. Jean de Luz beach is just a 20-minute walk away and is ideal for kids and swimming as it is in a protected bay breaking the bigger waves which you can find in Bidart and Biarritz for surfing. The ocean water is generally clear and warmed by the Gulf Stream. On the south side of the St. Jean de Luz bay, is an old fort near where you can rent sailboats and stand-up paddle boards, or take sailing, windsurfing, or scuba lessons. A small passenger ferry regularly transports between fort, port and beach. You can rent parasols and deck chairs at the beach which is life-guarded in the summertime. Both Ciboure and St. Jean de Luz have tourist offices and offer many cultural, culinary and historic activities, including lovely churches, markets, shops and restaurants. Our house is between the ocean and the beginning of the Pyrenees. The highest mountain in our area is La Rhune, at 998 meters. There are many hiking opportunities to choose from as well as visiting the countryside or going into Spain, just 10 kms away. San Sebastian is a 30 minute drive and Bilbao and Pamplona 1.5 hours away.
