Set in the working alpine village of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps in the Haute-Savoie, this top-floor chalet apartment sleeps six and makes a great base for skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer. A riverside balcony runs the full front of the apartment facing the mountains, with French doors leading in from the open-plan living area. The apartment has three bedrooms. Bedroom one has a super king bed, an en-suite with a walk-in shower and deep soaking tub, a wall-mounted Smart TV and balcony views. Bedroom two has a double bed under timber beams. Bedroom three has pine bunk beds built for adults as well as children and sleeps two. A second shower room off the living space keeps the morning queue short when the apartment is full. The open-plan living and dining area sits under the original beams, with leather sofas, a Smart TV and French doors onto the balcony. The kitchen has butcher block worktops, a deep sink, an oven and a dining table for the group. Out on the deck there's a gas barbecue for evenings you don't want to head inside. A utility room holds the washing machine and microwave, plus a store room for skis, boots, bikes and kit. Solid oak floors run throughout with zoned underfloor heating, so guests are asked to remove shoes inside and avoid heels. The apartment is reached by an external wooden staircase from the balcony, so there are stairs to climb and no lift, and several bedrooms sit under sloping beamed ceilings where head height is lower in places. Self check-in is available via a lockbox at the end of the balcony. The property is pet-friendly, with up to two pets welcome for an extra charge of fifty pound per stay. Early check-in or late check-out can be requested at twenty pound per hour, up to two hours, subject to availability.

Getting to the slopes and trails: The Roc d'Enfer ski and hiking area is six minutes away by car, with the wider Portes du Soleil beyond it and Morzine ten minutes on. In summer the same lifts and trails turn over to hiking and some of the best lift-served mountain biking in the Alps. The Chef-Lieu bus stop is a five-minute walk away, with buses running regularly into Morzine in about 15 minutes for one euro 60 cents. Once in Morzine, the town bus between Morzine and Avoriaz is free in winter, so guests can leave the car at the chalet and still get up the mountain. The free Balad'Aulps bus also serves the area. The area: Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is set along the river with mountains rising on every side. A bakery is round the corner for a breakfast baguette, a one-minute walk, and a Carrefour supermarket is five minutes on foot. Le P'tit Resto, known for French cuisine, is a fifteen-minute walk, and Bar Le National, a pub with pizzas and live music, is around twenty minutes on foot. The Abbaye d'Aulps, an eleventh-century monastery, is a five-minute drive. Between Saint-Jean and Morzine, next to the large Carrefour, is Woody, a new activity centre with laser quest, a climbing wall and plenty for children to do. Lac de Montriond, an alpine lake for swimming and kayaking, is a fifteen-minute drive, and Morzine centre is ten minutes by car. Geneva Airport is around one to one and a half hours away.
