The historic market town has its own mayor and market since its charter in the 13th Century. An original Magna Carta of King Edward 1st can be seen with other precious documents in the Town Council offices on Market Place, opposite the Guildhall. The tidal Creek is a dominant feature in the ages of Faversham's economy over many centuries, as is Watling Street, a route taken by pilgrims to Canterbury.
