Whispering Waters Lodges
Three uniquely-designed ecologically-friendly lodges set along the banks of the River Tees in Teesdale - one of the least-discovered parts of England. Designed and built by ourselves, the lodges are larch-clad, have meadow roofs that change with the seasons, and underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep you toasty and cosy. There are even hot tubs where you can sit and watch the stars go by.
All three lodges are owned and hosted by Bill who lives 200 metres away. Bill has 25 years experience in hospitality having started and run five of his own award-winning restaurants throughout the North East of England.
Well-kept secrets Teesdale, the first of the dales north of the Yorkshire Dales, is one of the UK's best-kept secrets. Comprising wonderful walking territory, it's home to 'England's Last Wilderness' and houses castles, stunning villages and one of the most surprising and amazing museums in the Country. Yet we're only 30 minutes from the World Heritage site of Durham City! Hidden treasures Gainford village itself is a hidden gem. Most people bypass it by road and never see the beautiful village green. And just down the road is the Bowes Museum which has the best collection of European fine and decorative arts in the North of England, all housed in a magnificent 19th-century French-style chateau. Similarly, ten minutes away is Raby Castle, one of the finest and best-preserved medieval castles in the country surrounded by wonderful parkland. Beyond Barnard Castle in Upper Teesdale is High Force, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England. Immediate walking . . In front of the lodges is a short section of the Teesdale Way river path. Turning right (West) takes you to a natural sulphur spring about five minutes away; a beautiful spot for sitting and contemplating or, when the river’s not too high, the perfect spot for swimming. In the other direction, there's a walk that follows the river into Gainford and brings you out on the village green, via the church yard. A much more pleasant walk than following the road, it takes about 20 minutes. Mediaeval market town Barnard Castle is the 'capital' of Teesdale and is 15 minutes away from Whispering Waters. With its 12th century castle, built to defend the crossing over the River Tees, Barnard Castle has all you'd expect from a quaint medieval market town with independent shops, pubs and restaurants, a thriving antiques sector and its oft-recognised pictured Butter Market. Durham and the North East Just 30 minutes from Whispering Waters is the City of Durham with its World Heritage...
