Company info

As you pass down our tree lined driveway, take the left fork, you’ll pass fields of sheep and cattle and wonder how this green space has remained hidden for so long in amidst busy city life. The trees will open out to show Cut Thorn Farm and you’ll be amazed at the tranquillity and lack of traffic noise that infiltrates usual daily life. Glamping at West Wood is a truly unique experience. We are a privately owned business, situated within the grounds of National Trust Gibside. Our guests are able to benefit from exclusive 24/7 access to Gibside, with entry available even after the gates close to the public! Gibside is a historic Georgian landscape offering woodlands, gardens, wildlife, buildings, play parks, low ropes, gorgeous views, marketplace, café & shop. There are often events on all year round and your admission is included in our booking prices, it’s a great spot for adults and kids alike. We have 2 accommodation types on offer; our Yurt Village for family friendly Yurts and our Hot Tub Hill area offers luxury Shepherd’s Hut, Pods & Wooden Yurt with Hot Tubs. Both areas offer something very different, we’re sure to have a holiday for you to enjoy.

Property info

The Hot Tub Hill area of our glamping site is situated at the westerly edge of this working farm & looks out over the Derwent Valley. Views to the rear of your accommodation may provide an insight into farm life, whilst the far ranging views to the front will wow you with the beautiful English landscape. Sitting on your private lawn in a steaming hot tub is just beautiful. The Yurt Village offers family friendly, back to nature escapes. There is a play castle & slide on site, along with a rope swing and den building area just 2 minutes through the gate into Gibside woodlands. Cars are parked offsite which gives a safe environment for kids to play. You can easily spend the full day in the woods as there’s always so much to do and see. The site is off grid so escape from the ties of TV and laptops, just enough solar energy to charge your phones. We recommend BBQ’s, picnics and laughter! Depending on the dates of your stay, you may witness lambing or calving, bringing home and stacking the harvest, or even working the flocks with collie dogs Kim & Bill. Access to Gibside is included in your stay, just take a walk into the woods whenever you feel like it!

Neighborhood info

Gibside is a National Trust property, this 18th Century landscape garden is a haven for nature and the rare “Red Kite” birds of prey have been successfully established in the area. The estate was previously owned by the Bowes-Lyon family and is most famous for the Chapel. Other points of interest on the Gibside Estate include: the Orangery; the restored stables; the Column to Liberty; the Georgian Walled Garden and the Banqueting House (owned by the Landmark Trust). Over 15 miles of footpaths explore the gardens, riversides and woodlands encompassing some breathtaking scenery and a wondrous insight into the local wildlife.
