I run this small hotel Proimos Maisonnettes that was inherited to me by my father and I love it! I am also a philosophy professor at the Hellenic Open University and a proud producer of organic extra virgin olive oil which you can taste at the Frog Island Snack Bar at the hotel. I live with my family in the town of Chania but I spend a lot of time at the hotel during the operating season. My wife Anna is a primary school teacher and we have three boys, nine and six years old who can come to the hotel provided that they are not making noise, This agreement is not always kept. We all like cycling, hiking, swimming, horse riding and tennis and enjoy dining out. Therefore, we are pleased to give tips to our guests and guide them in their discovery of Crete.

Proimos Maisonnettes was designed by my aunt Maria Polatou around 1985. The complex is inspired by traditional Cretan architecture while incorporating elements from modern design. Kenneth Frampton, a great American architectural critic has named this design style critical regionalism which was indeed in vogue during the nineteen eighties and early nineties. The complex disposes three buildings and thus gives the feeling of independence to its guests; te maisonnettes feel like bungalows or two storeyed apartments which have all independent entrance, balcony, yard and the like. Local stones, wood and tiles prevail giving the hotel a warm style that recalls paesant village homes. The mature garden along with the proximity to the sea make the hotel an ideal place to experience the Greek summer and outdoor living. Our ladies at the Frog Island Snack Bar cook every day to introduce you to the culinary delights of Greek cuisine, simple and hearty: tzatziki, village sausages, moussaka, aubergine dip, summer vegetables in fresh tomato sauce are some of our favorites. At Proimos Maisonnettes we know you by name.

Neighborhood info

Proimos Maisonnettes is at the end of Platanias, a small village of the greater Chania area. We are fortunate to be very close to a long sandy beach that is wonderful for all those who love sea water swimming and sun bathing. The beach is ideal for long strolls too and we are also very close to Iardanos river, a protected area where lots of birds find refuge and come to drink water. Our hotel is in an enclosed walled mature garden which is very serene. Likewise with the swimming pool area and our snack bar. However, for those who would like to explore dining out, enjoying cocktails and shopping, the village of Platanias has a lot of opportunities in just walking distance from the hotel. To the south of the village there are orange and olive groves which you can explore by hiking or by cycling and it is something we always recommend to our guests. Then you have the option of hoping into a public bus and go to Chania which is a lovely town of approximately 90000 inhabitants with a small but wonderful museums and most importantly an old town which is a protected medieval monument city bearing signs of Byzantine, Venitian and Ottoman influences.
