This is the true Hidden Ireland, where the Butler family built castles, where the O’Byrnes fought to maintain the Brehon laws against the Tudor settlements, where the abbeys of Cistercian monks are surrounded by lush pastures, where great stately mansions stand in beautiful parks, and abundant gardens flourish. For budding photographer’s and artist’s, there is beautiful scenery around the area. There are many high points above the towns to look, observe, photography and/or paint. The area is the centre of a growing hillwalking trend in the Southeast. The Barrow Towpath is also of course the route of the South Leinster Way. As well as that there are the Blackstairs Mountains and Brandon Hill.
