Bir is the paragliding capital of Asia, which brings a particular kind of traveller — people who want something real. The town has Buddhist monasteries, deodar forests, and a pace that is nothing like the cities most guests come from. The Kangra Valley spreads out below you at 1,525 metres. Mornings bring fog and monastery bells. Evenings bring stars that are genuinely unreasonable. The nearest airport is Gaggal (Dharamsala), about 90 minutes away. Most guests come overnight train from Delhi to Pathankot, then road through the hills — around 6 hours total, and worth every minute of it.
