Escape the noise. Wake up to apple orchards and ancient Deodar forests in Ratnari, 18 km from Narkanda, deep in the Himachal Pradesh hills.
The Sayo is not a hotel. It is a real Himachali family home — where your hosts Nitin and Payal Chauhan live, grow their food, and welcome one family at a time. No crowds. No strangers. Just you, the mountains, and a family that has called this land home for generations.
Drive right in to a completely private, fully drive-in property surrounded by apple, cherry, pear, and strawberry orchards — all organically grown. Fresh vegetables from the kitchen garden: potatoes, beans, peas — harvested and served at your table.
This is slow travel at its truest. Sit with your hosts. Share meals. Walk the orchard. Breathe air that has not been packaged or marketed. Reconnect — with nature, with people, with yourself.

Payal spent years in the corporate world — first in Chandigarh, then Bangalore. The career was fulfilling, but the hills kept calling. So she came back. Back to the quiet, the clean air, the slower pace she had always known was home. And yet, something from that former life stayed with her — a hunger for ideas, for people, for conversations that go somewhere real. A keen photographer with a genuine warmth for human stories, hosting became her most natural answer: a way to bring the world to the mountains.
Nitin grew up in a multi-generational Himachali home — raised not just by parents but by grandparents, granduncles and aunts, all under one roof. Education took him across different parts of India, where friendships across cultures and geographies quietly shaped in him a deep curiosity about how people live, what they believe, and what makes each place truly itself.
Together, they share one vision — and it is perhaps an unusual one for hosts: to learn. To learn from every guest who walks through their door. Their customs, their stories, their ways of seeing the world. The Sayo was not born just to offer an experience — it was born out of a genuine belief that every person carries
Step outside and you are already in your destination. Apple orchards stretch in every direction, framing your days with colour through every season. Ancient Deodar trees stand quiet beyond the orchard — cool, fragrant, and timeless. In season, small streams appear through the woods, catching light in a way that feels almost unreal.
The air here is genuinely clean — the kind that makes you notice your own breathing. When night falls, the sky opens up completely. No light pollution, just stars, deep and abundant, perfect for an unhurried evening of stargazing. Mornings invite something slower: yoga or meditation in the orchard, with nothing but birdsong and mountain air for company.
For those who like to wander, the land rewards curiosity. Birdwatchers will find plenty to discover through the Deodar woods. Spring and summer bring wildflowers threading through the undergrowth. And in the right season, the forest floor yields wild mushrooms — a quiet, rewarding hunt for those who know how to look.
There are no tourist crowds here. Ratnari sits 18 km from Narkanda on a road less travelled, offering the kind of stillness that most travellers spend years searching for.
