Welcome to “La RESIDENZA dei Promessi” The name “La Residenza dei Promessi” is inspired by Alessandro Manzoni’s famous novel “I Promessi Sposi” (“The Betrothed”). Each apartment in this residence is named after one of the story’s characters—so you can discover a little piece of Italian culture during your stay. The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) in a Nutshell In 17th-century Lombardy, near Lake Como, two young villagers, Renzo and Lucia, plan to marry. On the eve of the wedding, their local priest, Don Abbondio, is threatened and refuses to perform the ceremony. The reason is Don Rodrigo, a powerful nobleman who wants Lucia for himself. With help from Fra Cristoforo, a Capuchin friar who defends the weak, the couple tries to escape the danger. Plans fail, and Renzo and Lucia are separated. Renzo is forced to flee toward Milan, where unrest and hunger lead to riots and he becomes a wanted man. Lucia is hidden first with her mother, Agnese, and then in a convent linked to Gertrude, the Nun of Monza, whose troubled life makes her vulnerable to manipulation. Lucia is later kidnapped by the Unnamed, a feared local lord. In a turning point, he meets Cardinal Federigo Borromeo and chooses to change his life, freeing Lucia. As war and plague strike the region, the characters face loss, fear, and hard choices. In the end, Don Rodrigo’s power collapses, Renzo and Lucia find each other again, and they finally marry, learning that courage, faith, and solidarity matter even in dark times.
