Minshuku MIRAI is a private traditional guesthouse located in the mountain village of Matsudai, Tokamachi City, Niigata. This renovated Japanese farmhouse is limited to one group per day, offering guests a peaceful and fully private stay surrounded by nature. While preserving the atmosphere and character of a traditional Japanese home, the house has been carefully renovated for a comfortable stay. The property also includes a small doburoku brewery, allowing guests to experience Niigata’s unique fermentation culture up close. The area is known for its rice production, snowy winters, and traditional satoyama lifestyle that has been preserved for generations. Because the entire house is reserved exclusively for one group, guests can relax without worrying about other visitors. It is ideal for families, friends, workations, and longer stays. Each season offers a different landscape — fresh greenery in spring, vibrant rice terraces in summer, colorful autumn leaves, and deep snow in winter. At night, the area becomes incredibly quiet, and on clear days you may even enjoy a sky full of stars. Minshuku MIRAI is the perfect place for travelers looking to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience rural Japan.
The host also operates “AMAZAKE+,” a local drink stand specializing in amazake, a traditional Japanese fermented rice drink. Inspired by Niigata’s rich fermentation culture and snow-country food traditions, the host is involved in brewing and fermentation-based projects in the area. Depending on the timing of your stay, you may be able to see part of the amazake or doburoku making process at the property. If you are interested in fermentation, koji culture, amazake, or local food traditions, feel free to send a message before your stay. The host is also happy to share recommendations for local restaurants, hidden spots, and unique experiences around Matsudai and Tokamachi. Whether you want to simply relax or explore the local satoyama culture, we hope you enjoy your stay at your own pace.
Matsudai, located in Tokamachi City, is known as one of Japan’s heaviest snowfall regions. The abundant snow creates rich water and fertile soil, supporting beautiful rice terraces and traditional satoyama landscapes that still remain today. One of the area’s most famous sights is Hoshitoge Rice Terrace, known for its stunning seasonal scenery and occasional sea of clouds in the early morning. From spring to autumn, visitors can enjoy hiking, cycling, and scenic drives. In winter, the region transforms into a peaceful snow-covered landscape unique to rural Japan. The area is also home to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, one of the world’s largest outdoor art festivals, held every three years and attracting visitors from around the world. Many artworks and museums are scattered throughout Matsudai, creating a unique blend of nature, art, and local culture. Nearby hot springs and local restaurants also make the area ideal for a relaxing countryside stay. Come and experience the satoyama culture, snowy landscapes, and fermentation traditions of rural Niigata.
