Perched on a ridgetop above Whangaroa Harbour, this cedar-shingled A-frame barn is a one-of-a-kind holiday home in New Zealand's Far North. Luxurious for a couple, it can sleep up to 4 with a queen bed and two comfortable sofa beds, one on the mezzanine in the living area and the other on the ground floor, in the hallway. Designed by engineers to handle the hilltop winds and crafted by boat builders who know how to work in tight, angular spaces, the result is a property that feels entirely its own — industrial practicality meets rustic warmth. The completely open plan interior makes the most of soaring cedar walls and skylights that flood the space with natural light from dawn to dusk. Downstairs: cool polished concrete underfoot, a full kitchen, dining area, combined bathroom and laundry, and a fireplace. Upstairs on the mezzanine: a queen bed with harbour views, a second living area, and a dedicated workspace with high-speed WiFi — more than fast enough for video calls. Step outside and the location is hard to beat. The back patio faces Ota Point for unforgettable sunrises. A gas BBQ available over summer and trellised garden with picnic table offer sheltered outdoor dining. The expansive lawn gives you room to spread out, and the Barn's paddock below St Paul's Rock is perfect for kids or well-behaved dogs to play on. The Barn sits at the gateway to St Paul's Rock, widely regarded as one of New Zealand's best short hikes. Step off the property and straight onto the track. Twenty minutes to the summit, and the 360-degree views over the harbour are worth every step. The whole place is yours to enjoy. In the kitchen, you'll find cooking oils plus basic herbs and spices, so you just need to bring groceries. During winter, there's plenty of firewood for the fireplace. In summer, the BBQ is out on the patio. Whether you get blazing sun or howling gales, it's what memories are made of.
Traveller, remote worker, and now epic barn owner. I've always liked staying in places that feel like they could be your home, at least for a few days. No room service, neighbours you hardly know are there, and plenty of space to call your own. That's what I've aimed for here. It's a holiday home that you're welcome to stay in. Quirky, fun, and very, very comfortable, all year round.
Whangaroa sits in the heart of New Zealand's Far North, midway between the Bay of Islands and the golden beaches of Doubtless Bay. It's 8 minutes drive from Kaeo, which offers a small supermarket stocked with all the basics and several places to eat. The Bay of Islands was named in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2026, and Whangaroa is its quieter, less-discovered neighbour — the same stunning coastline, fewer crowds, and an authentic Northland pace of life. This area is known as the marlin capital of New Zealand and there are multiple fishing charters available that leave from the harbour, a 15-minute walk downhill from the Barn. Day trips are easy from here. Kerikeri (40 min south) has New Zealand's oldest stone and wooden buildings, Rainbow Falls, and the magnificent kauri trees of Puketi Forest. Paihia and Russell in the Bay of Islands (about an hour) offer dolphin cruises, the famous Hole in the Rock trip, and the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Head north to Mangonui (30 min) for legendary waterfront fish and chips, or explore the beaches — Tauranga Bay (20 min), Matauri Bay, Coopers Beach, and Cable Bay are all within easy reach. For the adventurous, Cape Reinga at the very tip of New Zealand — where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific — is a 2.5-hour drive north. Ninety Mile Beach and the giant Te Paki sand dunes are along the way. International visitors landing in Auckland can be here in under 4 hours, making Whangaroa a smart first stop to decompress before heading south. At current exchange rates, the Far North offers exceptional value — and you'll experience a side of New Zealand most visitors never see.
