Silves is situated in the middle of the province of Algarve: an ideal location for those that want to explore the whole of the Algarve. By any traveller’s standards Silves is incredibly picturesque, and one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns. The town’s beautiful cobbled streets, old bridge, colorful buildings, the nearby countryside is made up of hundreds of orange and lemon growing farms. Faro Airport is roughly 50 minutes by car and the nearest beaches - Praia da Marinha(14km) and Praia de Benagil(15Km) are about 20 min. by car. Silves was the capital of the ancient Arab kingdom of Algarve and its most important city.

Places to be seen in SILVES: THE OLD TOWN: The historic centre retains the Middle Ages layout and the charm of the streets of the old medina, an atmosphere that reaches its highest expression during the Mediaeval Fair in mid-August, an historical reconstitution not to be missed. There is a small square with the Town Hall, a turret and a pillory. When walking around the old town you will find plenty of shops selling local products and handicrafts, several bars and restaurants. Please note that the Castle was built on a hill, going up there can thus be quite tiring. The best is to wear runners or sandals when exploring the old town by foot. The moorish CASTLE is the most famous landmark of Silves - it was built between the 8th and 13th century, probably on an ancient 4th/5th century Roman fort. Restored in the 20th century is the best preserved castle in the Algarve. Silves was conquered from the Moors in 1189 by King Sancho I. GOTHIC CATHEDRAL: Built in the 13th century on the site of a mosque. Heavily damaged by the earthquake of 1755, but since then it has been rebuilt. CHURCH OF MISERICÓRDIA: 16th century - its lateral portico - Manueline style.

ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM: The water reservoir was discovered in the 20th century and became the centerpiece of the museum. In an excellent state of preservation, it dates back to the Almohade period (12th/13th centuries) and made out of Silves sandstone it is around 20 meters in depth. It is considered an example unique to Portugal as it has a helix staircase with three windows to ensure easier access to the water. CHAPEL OF NOSSA SENHORA DOS MÁRTIRES: dating from the12th century, to which Gothic and Baroque elements were added. CROSS OF PORTUGAL: dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, conceived in the florid Gothic style. ARADE RIVER: It was for centuries until the 19th century, the great route for communication with the coast, it was navigable from Portimão up to as far as Silves - where an important port used to exist, especially for the cork trade.
