Maia is a parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel, Azores. This parish is made up of the places of Maia, Lombinha da Maia, Calços da Maia and Gorreana. Thanks to the mild climate of the island, the absence of frost and moderate exposure to the sun and rain, the parish of Maia has become an ideal place for growing tea. In particular, in Gorreana, the clayey and acidic soil allowed to obtain a fragrant tea with a pleasant aftertaste. The Gorreana Tea Factory is one of the most famous in the Azores and stands out for its organic production, free of pesticides and derivatives. This factory is located on a 75 hectare property and produces black, green and semi-fermented tea. Sea lovers will undoubtedly want to visit the Natural Pools of Calhetas da Maia. This is a pleasant bathing area, made up of rock formations, where corals stand out, visible to the naked eye when the tide is low. The natural pools are not the only attraction of this parish. There is also Praia do Calhau da Maia, a small cove with dark sand. Ideal for families, this beach is easily accessible and is located close to several services.
