Highland Homes is a small, locally run hospitality brand on Pico Island in the Azores. We own and operate stone homes that offer calm, privacy, and a genuine connection to the island. Our property manager, Érica, lives in the village of Santo Amaro, just down the hill from the homes. The owner's family is originally from Santo Amaro as well, with relatives still living just a few doors down. These homes were purchased to preserve that connection and to share this quiet corner of Pico with guests from around the world. When possible, we source products locally from Pico first, then the other islands. We focus on the details that make travel feel easy: clear guidance before you arrive, easy communication, a thoughtful setup, and reliable support on the ground. We also share honest, practical recommendations for exploring Pico, from natural pools and trails to local food, wine, and seasonal experiences. Our goal is simple: a smooth, well cared for stay that fits Pico's slower pace and leaves you feeling rested, not managed.

The homes are located in Terra Alta, a quiet residential area in Santo Amaro on Pico’s north coast. It’s a calm setting on a dead-end street, with open views of the sea and São Jorge on the horizon. A hiking trail at the end of the road leads up through the hills to a beautiful viewpoint, one of many across the island. Santo Amaro is a small village with a slower pace and a genuine everyday feel. It’s not a tourist hub, which is part of the charm. There’s a small grocery store for basics, local products, and Pico wines, a friendly neighborhood bar, and a couple of good places to eat within walking distance or a short drive. The village also has a naval museum, an artisan school, and a small shop with handmade goods for anyone interested in Pico’s history and craft. From here, it’s easy to explore the rest of the island without feeling rushed. Natural pools, swimming areas, coastal walks, and scenic viewpoints are all a short drive away. Lajes do Pico, known for whale watching and its connection to the island’s whaling history, is about 30 minutes by car. A rental car is recommended to make the most of Pico, but the immediate area is ideal for quiet mornings, simple walks, and coming back to rest at the end of the day.
