Calhau Grande is the perfect location to spend a great holiday time in Madeira Island. Being a group of 8 typical self-catering cottages, it is a simple and genuine haven for those looking for a quiet escape and a real experience of Madeira Island’s lifestyle, with an excellent sun exposure, facing south, the ocean and enjoying a colourful garden. Close to the ocean and still on the verdant mountain, each cottage has its own private exterior area, which take advantage of warm temperatures and breath-taking panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. The cottages have been carefully and eco-friendly restored with love and care by our Family Gouveia and suit the natural environment surrounded by tropical gardens. You can smell the gardens, relax in the shared swimming pool, enjoy wonderful sunsets, discover our agricultural land with fruit trees, vegetables and aromatic herbs. It is a familiar, romantic and peaceful place away from the stressful living! To enjoy these wide ocean views and to overcome the height differences of our beautiful terraced gardens and balconies, we advise any guest with reduced mobility to be aware of stairs only accesses and steep roads.

Eva, Eleutério, Sofia, Fábio, Catarina and Pedro; you will meet at least one of us during your stay with us. Even though we will leave you at your ease, we are available whenever needed. We strive to be present to welcome you at check in and whenever it is possible. Calhau Grande means a lot to us, we chose this place for our family and friends and we really wish you feel comfortable and like at home! It is the sharing result of our rural experience in Madeira. Located in western Madeira, in a friendly and quiet bay-shaped village, at 250m above the ocean, it looks like Spring all year, with a surprisingly balmy weather! 24ºC to 27ºC in Summer, and 17ºC to 20ºC in Winter. Surrounded by banana plantations and tropical gardens. A strategic point to know Levadas, mountain and sea activities, profiting from the simplicity and harmony of the rural area. While you can reach us by car, taxi or bus, we highly recommend to hire a car. The airport is 45km (45 mins) away. Having a car will allow you to explore the island to its full potential with comfort, flexibility and economy, wherever you want. At 15 minutes from the top of Calheta Mountains (Paul da Serra) with its breath taking natural landscapes and wonderful Levada walks, you may also reach the ocean level and the beach within 5 minutes. Funchal is 30km away. To live a local life, you find mini-market, restaurants and bars within walking distance. In Madeira, you will discover an adventure for each day: local traditions, beautiful Levadas and walks with spectacular scenarios, the Laurissilva Forest (World Heritage by UNESCO), a variety of regional dishes, touristic events...
