Welcome to our dream come true! We still remember the first time we saw this house. It was almost in ruins… and yet, there was something about it. Its architecture, the garden, the high ceilings, the feeling that it had so many stories to tell, and right in the heart of Porto. It was love at first sight. Not only for what it was, but for what it could become. We dreamed of bringing it back to life and creating a place where travellers like ourselves could feel at home while discovering the city. What began as a simple trip soon turned into a life-changing journey. The journey has not always been easy, there have been challenges, long days, and many sleepless nights. But step by step, together with a wonderful team and the architect Ren Ito, the house slowly came back to life. Great care was taken in the renovation to preserve its character, with a strong focus on craftsmanship, materials, and the balance between heritage and contemporary design. Today, every detail reflects the care and thought behind the renovation. What we enjoy most is welcoming you and sharing this special place. Casa Kala is a boutique guesthouse in the center of Porto, where a quiet garden and a restored 20th-century mansion offer a rare sense of calm just steps from the city's main sights. Set on Rua da Firmeza, near Mercado do Bolhão and Capela das Almas, the house is surrounded by a private garden and gently set back from the street. While everything is within walking distance, the atmosphere feels peaceful and secluded. Hidden behind a discreet gate, the restored mansion reveals itself slowly. What was once in ruins has been carefully brought back to life, preserving the original character of the building. Inside, natural light fills the entrance hall designed by architect Januário Godinho, where the original staircase and chandelier remain at the heart of the house. Casa Kala received a national architecture prize for its renovation, blending heritage with contemporary design. With only 9 rooms, Casa Kala offers an intimate and personal stay. Each room features high ceilings and large windows with plenty of natural light, along with a private bathroom, air conditioning, heating, flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, USB ports, and double-glazed windows to ensure a quiet night’s rest. Mornings begin with a delicious breakfast, freshly prepared for you. Throughout your stay, we are always happy to share our favorite places in Porto, from small local restaurants to walks and day trips. We can also help arrange private tours and experiences, allowing you to discover the city and its surroundings in a more personal way. After a day exploring, guests often enjoy returning to the garden, whether to read, rest in a hammock, or simply slow down for a moment. For an extra touch of relaxation, massages can be arranged. Casa Kala is located in the center of Porto, within walking distance of all the city’s main sights, yet set on a quieter street away from the busier areas. The house itself sits slightly above street level, surrounded by a private garden, so it feels protected from the city, like a small oasis in the heart of Porto. The neighbourhood has an authentic character, where you still experience the rhythm of local Porto. While everything is close by, the atmosphere remains relaxed and genuine. Just a few steps from the house, you will find Capela das Almas and Mercado do Bolhão, while Rua de Santa Catarina, Porto’s main shopping street, is only a short walk away. From Casa Kala, many of Porto’s most iconic places can be reached easily on foot. Within 10–15 minutes, you can walk to Avenida dos Aliados, São Bento Railway Station, or explore streets like Rua do Almada and Rua das Flores, known for their shops, galleries, and cafés. Continuing down towards the river, you’ll reach the historic Ribeira district, the Sé Cathedral, and the Dom Luís I Bridge, with beautiful views over the Douro. The neighbourhood also offers everything you might need during your stay, with restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets nearby.
