Keerweder is a fascinating historical estate with a rich heritage. It was proclaimed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1692 and one of the first farms in the Franschhoek Valley to be granted to Europeans by Governor Simon van der Stel. It was allotted to Swiss-born Heinrik Muller from Basel who named it Keerweder, meaning both to "turn back" due to its unique location at the foot of a mountain range but also to "come again". While it began with a focus on viticulture, over time the estate evolved to include a variety of agricultural pursuits and in the modern era, Keerweder continues its legacy as a commercial farm, primarily renowned for its plum production. The estate itself is an impressive blend of old and new, maintaining its reputation for quality produce while preserving its historical roots. The cottages are set on the far side of the farm werf flanked by a typical Cape Dutch homestead built in 1830 and adjacent to the old packshed, now a converted and renovated entertainment space called the Dome with views of rolling lawns and lush trees. It has been guest cottages since 1994 and was recently refurbished again and decorated with the estate's heritage in mind and furnished to the highest standards. Hike, bike, fish, picnic or pick some plums in summer and cuddle up in front of a crackling fire with a glass of wine and a good book in winter or just explore what is on offer in the Franschhoek Valley. Whatever the season, Keerweder Cottages are perfectly suited for those seeking a peaceful and relaxing getaway.
