Tucked between majestic mountains and serenaded by birdsong, Tulbagh is one of South Africa’s oldest towns—just 90 minutes from Cape Town, yet a world away in charm. Its roots stretch back to 1699, with the town officially established in 1743. Named after Governor Ryk Tulbagh, this valley settlement became a vital stop for early travellers heading into the country’s interior. Today, Tulbagh offers a timeless glimpse into the past, with beautifully preserved architecture and a rich cultural heritage. Nowhere is this more evident than on Church Street—South Africa’s best-preserved heritage street—home to the largest concentration of Cape Dutch, Victorian, and Edwardian buildings in the country. Each of its 32 provincial monuments tells a story of resilience and restoration. A defining moment in Tulbagh’s history came on 29 September 1969, when a powerful earthquake—measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale—struck the valley. It devastated Tulbagh, Ceres, and Wolseley, causing widespread destruction and claiming 12 lives. Church Street was particularly hard-hit, with many historic homes reduced to rubble. Yet from this tragedy rose a remarkable restoration effort. A national campaign to rebuild the town’s architectural legacy not only preserved its unique character but also sparked a renewed appreciation for South Africa’s built heritage. Whether you're drawn by wine, history, or the serenity of the countryside, Tulbagh welcomes you with warm hospitality and authetic charm.
