The historic main house, completed in 1792 and now a proclaimed national monument, overlooks the majestic Witzenberg Mountains and forms part of a traditional T-shaped Cape Dutch farm complex with several original outbuildings. Founded by Bernardus De Vaal, a reader and teacher from Tulbagh, Schalkenbosch has long been part of the agricultural heritage of the Valley. Today the farm offers heritage accommodation that still reflects its 18th-century roots. The three heritage cottages are fully equipped, self-catering units accommodating two adults each. Unit 1 can accommodate 2 extra guests or children. Each cottage offers a full bathroom, kitchen, comfortable living room with fireplace, and a private braai. Schalkenbosch is located just outside the historic town of Tulbagh, a village rich in history, known for the 1969 earthquake and its beautifully restored Cape Dutch buildings. Guests can explore local museums, visit wine farms, and enjoy the restaurants in Tulbagh. The distance is approximately 7-10 km from the town, and it usually takes about 10-15 minutes by car. However, the sunsets and peaceful atmosphere on the farm are so special that you may not feel like going back into town for dinner. We offer a curated menu available in the cottages, from which guests can order. Meals can be delivered to your cottage or served under the trees or by the pool.
