FAQs about hotels in Monterey

A Wild Coastline and Even Wilder Sealife

Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laid-back Monterey is on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some former canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.

The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.

South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.

Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.

Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.

We know this area very well.

We know this area very well. There is so much to explore within minutes! Take the time to see Point Lobos, it is spectacular! The Aquarium is a must, along with Cannery Row. Fisherman's Wharf is fun and the beach is right there. There is so much to enjoy! Plan before you go so you don't miss out on what you want to see!

I did NOT feel safe in Monterey as a Queer Disabled Person of Color. I think it's dangerous to travel alone with this identity and if you do decide to go I recommend staying close to the downtown area and trying to have your own car rental as the Uber service there is very slow and kinda dangerous for Queer People of Color. My drivers were pretty creepy. It's definitely NOT the big city and there is a serious lack of professionalism.

The city was having modern and rural vibe.

The city was having modern and rural vibe. There are activities for all ages like boat ride, kayaking, children park and aquarium. My favorite spot was the Cannerary row, Lovers point park and Point Lobos. The apple pie chocolate was so delicious.

Mid week, the touristy areas are much less crowded.

Mid week, the touristy areas are much less crowded. Easy to navigate, easy to find parking, etc.The place is just magic, especially if you go beyond the confines of Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. Alvarado street in downtown is a delight! The specialty ice cream shop always has a line...its that good. By Thursday, the crowds start coming in and the touristy areas become difficult to navigate or find parking that doesn't cost the price of a good meal.

Nice large clean room with a sea view on the top floor of the annex building across the road from the main hotel. Room servicing was great at keeping the room clean and kept up a supply of fresh towels. Beds were comfortable. Plenty of car parking with space to maneuver. Location within walking distance of downtown Monterey, about 15-20 minutes walk to Fisherman's Wharf.

Great staff at the receptions. They were very happy to give us indications on what to do. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel has a small swimming pool which is nice for a quick dive but not big enough for a swim. Great location, very close to old Monterey.

The hotel is just down the street from Cannery Row and an easy 15-20 walk to downtown Monterey. It is reasonably priced compared to anything else you're going to find at this location. I liked not having to worry about getting breakfast before going out for the day.
