Beautiful clean boutique-y hotel. We loved our stay here and the food was amazing. Grasmere is so cute. We stayed here on our way on the Coast to Coast Trek. Scones and coffee and tea are available throughout the day. Very beautiful location along a river.

The room was warm and welcoming. We booked 50 minutes earlier, the receptionist said, The room is ready now. Beautiful grounds to walk around. Felt like one of the elites staying there to be honest. The breakfast was really good and plenty of choice as we sat in this amazing place for our breakfast. Staff are all lovely people. The cleaners were friendly and smiley. Really impressed by the whole experience will visit again.

FAQs about hotels in Lake District

Poetic Artistry at its Best

The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.

A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.

In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

The hotel is in a great location - just inland from a landing stage on Derwent Water and a 2-mile drive into Borrowdale from Keswick. Unfortunately, due to extremely high rainfall recently the landing stages all round the lake were cut off by high water levels - but this isn't usual and shouldn't detract visitors. Breakfasts were excellent and dinners very enjoyable. The staff were brilliant, friendly, and always keep the hotel spotless - a real asset to the hotel. One extra, thoughtful, thing are the well-stocked bird feeders just outside the restaurant windows - always a magnet for the surrounding birdlife - and a joy to see first thing in the morning.

The property is beautiful and in an amazing location. Room was very comfortable, there was even a TV on the wall opposite the bath. Great for a soak. Food was beautiful never had a menu with starter and main for breakfast and to enjoy it in the conservatory was delightful. Staff were all bright and cheerful and nothing was a trouble. Windermere is a great location as a base for exploring the Lake District as it is a hub for rail and bus routes. Days out using the buses is far less stressful than using a car - see the views, and have no worries about parking etc. Do look at the map. Windermere IS NOT next to Lake Windermere - but a long walk / bus journey away to Bowness-on-Windermere. Windermere is quieter, but still with many shops/cafes . By contrast Bowness-on-Windermere is a very popular destination for coach-trips, with many "tourist shops" and the starting point for many ferry/cruises onto the lake. My choice would be to stay in Windermere and then have a half day visit Bowness-on-Windermere.

We stayed at Waterhead, delightful area. Our golden retriever could happily go into the water. Busy but not too much. Liked the bars for sitting out by the lake and the little coffee shop. We went into Ambleside town. Very very busy, struggled to park, but did manage eventually. We thought the town looked a little bit tired.

Shap was lovely, 10 miles from Penrith, so it is a shame this software came up with inaccurate location and worse that there is no facility to put it right. We did drive through and round Penrith but can't say any more about it. Shap had nice countryside all round. We liked our meal in the Crown Inn. Co op shop was good. Shap Abbey was well worth a visit. Shap was also a good location for seeing lots of good places all around

The hostel is in an excellent secluded position, a few minutes walk from GRASMERE village. The countryside around is beautiful. In summer Grasmere itself as a ‘honeypot’ destination with its location and Wordsworth connections is quite pricey and fairly busy with cars and tourists during the daytime. The food in Lewis’s Bistro was excellent, booking required. Lancrigg looked a delightful place for a coffee if you wanted a very short walk from the village into the valley.

I really like Grange over Sands and think the South Cumbria coast is a well kept secret. There are lovely views over the estuary and someone had the foresight to put windows in the wall of the railway station so you can see the view. The trainline is great for access to other parts of the coast and good value. I didn't spend much time in Grange itself as I was on a walking holiday but other places in the area look good to visit - eg Ulverston, Cark, Cartmel, Holker Hall.
