The location was fantastic. Beautiful view of the lake a far away from the mad crowds of Kyoto. The staff and the service was unbelievable for the price by far the best accommodation hotel service we experienced in Japan

The staff here are incredible. They went above and beyond to help us celebrate our honeymoon. I was so grateful for how hard they all worked and how kind they all were. We also got the breakfast service in our room, which was excellent, and they provided several drinks in the fridge for us for free. They shuttled us from the station and back to it, and we were even sent off by the staff at the end of our stay. So friendly and welcoming. Also, our deluxe suite had the private open air bath, and I can't recommend that enough. It was so relaxing and incredible. Lastly, I personally loved the toiletries and additional things that came with the room (shampoo, straightener, beverages, yukata, pajamas, etc.)

I fell in love with the newly renovated Spa. It was the highlight of my trip.

Our stay was fantastic! The staff were warm, attentive, and always ready to help. The traditional Japanese garden was a beautiful, peaceful retreat. Breakfast was exceptional, with a delicious variety to start the day right. A special touch was the complimentary late-night snack our host had waiting for us after a night out — a thoughtful gesture that made us feel truly welcome. Highly recommended!

As a solo traveler, I loved the location at the foot of Chion-in Temple. The hotel is within walking distance to many temples and shrines and a perfect location for enjoying magical evening strolls in and around Gion. Everything was perfect! The room was quiet and comfortable. The hotel staff were all very friendly, courteous and helpful with all my requests. Every evening, I enjoyed a delicious kaiseki meal after a soothing soak in the hotel's serene public bath. I also appreciated attending the morning Buddhist ceremony, which was very special. I have already started recommending this hotel to my friends.

Great location, very clean, great staff!

This was my second time visiting Engawa, and Mr. Li and his family were just as wonderful as before. They gave us a warm welcome and were very kind to let us check in late. Mr. Li shared his beautiful photography, took us on a night tour, and even drove us to the hot spring. He is very knowledgeable about Kyoto and shared us excellent travel recommendations. The room is cozy and clean. Highly recommend this place ☺️

The house is authentic, and atmospheric. You really don't hear other guests. The service is wonderful, everybody is very helpful. You can leave your luggage for the day. Free coffee and tea offered. Laundry service is available for a fee. It's well connected. The canal nearby, close to the Kyocera museum of art and Rohm theater, is a wonderful walk, and it takes you all the way to the temples in Gion. Quiet neighborhood and cheaper food than in Gion.

One of the best apartments I’ve stayed in Kyoto so far. It’s clean, newish, friendly hospitality from the workers, my fav part is the bathroom rain head shower lol. Comfy beds, even a washing machine/dryer combo for your laundry. Free coffee and water in the lobby area. Location is very good, heaps of cafes, restaurants, e-bike rentals, konbini’s etc, within walking distance. Definitely be back soon !

Great location, good price, quiet despite being in a central area.

Great place best comfy very roomy and different bed options for Western/ Japanese room meant 3 of us very comfortable loads of space. Loved washer dryer and Kitchenette brilliant location near everything so central. Super quiet great comfy bedding

Kyoto is my absolute favorite among the large Japanese cities, and when in Kyoto, this hotel is always my first choice. I usually book the same type of room. While it’s slightly more expensive than I’d wish, it’s absolutely worth it: always perfectly clean, and the staff are consistently smiling and incredibly helpful. What I like? The room was spotless, calm and quiet. The hotel staff were exceptional — genuinely warm, attentive, and helpful. The location is ideal, within walking distance of everything, yet offering a peaceful riverfront retreat after a busy day. Breakfast was delicious and well organized...

Quiet, nice, not so far away from Kyoto Station

Amazingly friendly staff, great service, phenomenal breakfast, beautiful atmosphere.

The hotel’s interior was stunning, complemented by a beautiful garden setting. The service level was exceptional, and the staff were highly professional, assisting with packing my bags and even handling shipment arrangements. The reception staff were also very friendly, making my stay even more enjoyable.

Great little boutique hotel in the heart of Gion. Rooms are comfy with lots of complimentary extras available in the lobby. Staff were super friendly & very helpful. Walking distance to shops, transport & loads of attractions. Highly recommend.

The location cant' be beat. Close walking distance to Takashimaya, Daimaru, Don Quijote, Teramachi & Nishiki Market, Gion, shopping, restaurants & multiple train station/lines. The staff were very helpful on check in and check out, and were readily available whenever we called using the reception phone. Room 301 was very spacious with a fantastic view and private deck overlooking the Kamo River. The large bathroom with 2 sinks was convenient, not to mention a 2nd powder room near the entry. There was a large walk in closet to place our 2 (open) suitcases and kept it out of the way. Couldn't have done this trip without the in-room washer/dryer (laundry soap provided), just beware, 1 load will take you about 3 to 4 hours. The tatami room/tea room was a nice touch along with the Bose speaker playing jazz upon arrival. The bedroom was nice and quiet allowing for restful sleep in the comfy pajamas provided. Room 401 was a large studio overlooking the small street below, which really isn't terribly noisy (if you're sensitive to every little sound, earplugs work). This room had 2 twin beds, in-room washer/dryer, micro, refrigerator, etc. It does not have the "wow" features of 301, but it was a nicely appointed and comfortable room. We had an enjoyable stay at Aoi and would definitely stay in either of these rooms again.

Rooms are stunning, big surfaces, full facilities and amenities, extremely clean. The most comfortable bed (futon on tatami) we have ever had. The hotel is elegant and stylish, contemporary in traditional Japanese beautifulness. Best location in town. The terrace is the cherry on the cake offering an amazing view. Staff is very professional, kind, helpful, always smiling and offering the perfect customer care, perfectly English speaking. A true GEM in Kyoto and the perfect getaway to celebrate special journey!

Location was excellent, close to a main station. The rooms and bathrooms were well equipped and very comfortable. Breakfast was also excellent with a great variety of choices.
