FAQs about hotels in San Gimignano

A Tempting Tuscan Sun

San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. However, it is when you get up-close-and-personal with this medieval-walled city and crane your neck to the blue sky that you truly appreciate its mesmerising beauty.

If you take away the swarming summer tourists circling the piazzas of San Gimignano, then this city offers you a wonderful trip back in time. The main square, Piazza della Cisterna, is surrounded by Romanesque buildings and Piazza del Duomo features Torre Grossa, the city’s tallest tower.

San Gimignano, originally an Entruscan village, was part of the ancient pilgrim route Via Francigena joining France to Rome. Its name was derived from the Bishop of Modena and is well known today as the Town of Fine Towers.

The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a worth a visit with its wonderful collection of frescoes, and it also includes the Religious Art Museum.

Whether it is sitting on a restaurant terrace sipping some local Vernaccia wine or attending the lively Thursday Market, Booking.com has a range of San Gimignano hotels, guest houses and apartments for your stay. And just out of the city are options such as farm stays and country houses in the Tuscan countryside.

As a World Heritage site, its ancient history and incredibly well preserved medieval architecture…just the whole ambiance of the place…wandering alleys that were trod 1000 years ago…what an experience! A great town for just following one’s nose following a hunch through alleys and around corners. The only warning I have is that the town sits on the top of the hill…therefore, one of the Tuscan “hill towns” so be prepare for fairly strenuous walks from the entry gate up to the piazzas and castle.

San Gimignano is a beautiful and incredibly photogenic town with a truly unique atmosphere. It's definitely worth visiting—but of course, many other people think so too, so be prepared for plenty of tourists. During the day, the town gets quite crowded, but it becomes much more enjoyable later in the evening. We also highly recommend trying the gelato at **Gelateria Dondoli**—it's absolutely outstanding!

Beautiful. It can get busy but there’s a reason for that.

Beautiful. It can get busy but there’s a reason for that. Stay for the evenings when you can explore the side streets on your own. Wonderful food in Ristorante Belsoggiorno. Visit the Duomo for the frescoes, the Torre Grosse for the views and the Rocca for the peace. Easily walkable in a day or spend a few days ambling around and exploring at leisure. Best gelato - Dondolis - rose and lychee / raspberry and rosemary were my favourites !

Arrive early or after 17:00 as tour buses make it more crowded. There are local buses to take you in to the centre. Hotels will have times. Harder walking for some as there are some steep streets. Plenty of places to eat and drink and gelaterias.

Our hotel (le volpaie in castel san gimignano) was perfect for our stay/visit to san gimignano and other tuscan towns. san gimignano itself was a good place to visit, you get the historic vibes, and you get good options for food and sightseeing. ample parking around and outside the main city square, easy to avoid ZTLs here.

A unique Tuscan town.

A unique Tuscan town. There are lots of other hill top towns around also worth a visit but the history of this one is interesting and this is seen in the buildings (towers). Two of the best gelato shops in Italy. Can also recommend Osteria Baccano on the street running parallel to the main shopping street.

Wonderful from start to finish. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was great, location good and beautiful views. Bonus having the small pools. The food in the restaurant was some of the best we had during our time in Italy and they were extremely accommodating for my partner's gluten intolerance. Be sure to try their wine, we loved it. The room was great, spacious, clean and a wonderful modern addition into the authentic building.

This was the most stunning Airbnb we stayed at during our entire trip across Italy. The house is beautifully decorated and feels incredibly cozy—perfect for a family vacation. It features a spacious garden that offers breathtaking views of the picturesque Tuscan countryside. Plus, self-check-in is available. I highly recommend it; I will definitely be back!
