AnnaMaria met us personally to hand off the keys, and show us all the features of the home. Everything was clean and new, they have recently refurbished everything. She provided juice & water in the fridge, coffee, and some special treats. Her family visited us the next morning to say hello, and be sure we had enjoyed our stay. They were delightful hosts! She also recommended local restaurants, and shops with authentic local products. The town of Bernalda was a great place for us to break our driving journey from Puglia back to Napoli. It is an authentic Italian town, without any sign of tourism... walkable, friendly, and scenic located up on a ridge. Not too far from the beaches, or from Matera. It would be a great quiet place to stay a few days, and explore the area. I wish we had more time! We would certainly return to this property if we can swing another Italy trip in the future. Casa della Nonna is a gem, a one in a million find. Tucked away in a private little dead end cobblestone side street with parking at the door, it is lovingly and thoughtfully set up by someone wanting to make you feel welcome. Antonella has thought of everything, including a choice of normal and decaffeinated coffees and even tea although not many Italians drink it. There were little cakes waiting for us in the fully equipped kitchen, and cold water in the fridge. The apartment has a large living area with couch and dining table, a generous bathroom and a comfortable large bed. Everything was spotlessly clean and tidy. It's like coming home. Then there is the town around it. Montalbano is a lovely little place at the top of a hill with incredible views all around no matter where you go, and a maze of little streets to lose yourself in. Half an hour's drive from here is Draco, an abandoned ancient hilltop village dating back to 540BC. Add another half hour and you are in Matera, home to the ancient Sasso caves and designated the European Capital of Culture for 2019. It also holds the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site, specifically for the "Sassi di Matera". This recognition highlights the city's unique history, cultural heritage, and the remarkable cave dwellings that define its landscape. Casa della Nonna is definitely well worth visiting and we will be back when next we return to Italy.

Sparkling clean apartment that had everything we needed for a 2 night stay. Location was perfect for walking everywhere within the old historic area. The hosts were the nicest people we met in 4 weeks in Italy. They drove us to the train station & waited with us until the train arrived. We had great fun communicating via Google Translate.
