United StatesGlenys greeted us with a warm welcome. The small and perfectly accommodating bedroom with ensuite had everything we needed. The muffins for breakfast were wonderful. We appreciated her going above and beyond with ice for our drinks as it was quite a warm day. We look forward to staying again on our next adventure to New Zealand.

AustraliaBreakfast was fantastic eggs how you liked them toast cereal OJ. Beds very comfortable. Great hosts highly recommended to anyone staying in Hokitika. Best part of the night was the SPAR I spent over an hour very relaxing @ 39dgs. Close to town hoists very informative. We will be back to stay next year.

Some great little places to eat and the food was outstanding...
Some great little places to eat and the food was outstanding. Hats off to the Hokitika Sandwich Company, first time I tried sauerkraut and loved it. Also kudos to Thatcher and Small, had a great meal there as well. Beach is outstanding, great for a walk, even in the cold!

The lake is worth a visit as is the beach,

The suspension bridge over the Hokitika gorge hike was most impressive. While we didn’t make it all the way down to the 2nd bridge (which was apparently closed for repairs) we were happy with the opportunity to still across the first bridge and get some great pics.
The Tree Top walk was rather —meh— not sure it was worth the cost of admission; my sister was seriously freaked out by the heights of the walkway so she didn’t enjoy it too much. However, the cafe there is quite good!

Hokitika has so much history with really friendly, down-to-earth people ready for a chat or friendly g'day. It lives up to the promotional name - A Cool Little Town! Felt safe as a solo traveller. Everything you need for eating out or staying in. Papers Plus is must visit with West Coast & local history books on sale, plus rare books & all the usual newsagent things. The scenery & history is outstanding, the Museum well worth a visit. I explored, walked, talked, ate, relaxed, discovered new facts about its history & generally felt at home & welcome.

The area is beautiful, the beach and the lake.
The area is beautiful, the beach and the lake. There is free camping at the lake by the way. I would do that next time. I ate at the Mahinapua Hotel however most of the time the kitchen is closed. What I had was basic. I would recommend Fat Pippi's pizza for whitebait fritters. That would be my next choice. I would avoid the Mahinapua Hotel on my next visit.

The word "Retreat" in the title gave me the expectation of luxurious accomodation with fully contained rooms, spas etc. None of that, which was disappointing. A small private holiday park would cover it better.

A nice west coast town.
A nice west coast town. Caters well to the tourist with plenty of gift shops and places to eat. The beach at sunset was stunning and there are plenty of walking tracks nearby. We easily filled in 2 days there.

We had a larger group of 4 families of different sizes, the villa and cabin options fitted with our agenda and stay perfectly. We did a lot of driving and exploring during the day and cooked at home / played games in the evening. It was a lot of fun.
