Excellent shops and cafes, some lovely gardens higher up the...
Excellent shops and cafes, some lovely gardens higher up the main street, a great park with play area, 'pump track' and community woodland with views to the Pennines. I've always loved the steam railway and the small but fascinating transport museum is also a highlight. An unexpected bonus was the Alston Sheepdog trial on 20th June!
Nearby the walk up to and around the Epiacum Roman fort site (not much in the way of stonework but very impressive multiple ramparts and superb views) is well worth it, and the cafe by the carpark is great (loved the sausage rolls!). And Lambley viaduct is impressive with an attractive walk to and fro (you can do a circular walk from the smaller unsignposted Coanwood carpark, which also makes a shorter walk than from the 'official' car park - though there are steep steps to negotiate for the 'circle').

Alston is a lovely small town.
Alston is a lovely small town. We arrived on Gala day which was lovely. Parking is tricky, but not really a problem. Parking is free and we managed to find parking at the top and the bottom of the town

Could have stayed a couple to 3 days if doing the Pennine Way and able to organise transport to and from beginning/end of next sections as often very nice not to have to unpack and pack every night of the trails!

Alston is a quiet town that has kept its character.
Alston is a quiet town that has kept its character. Doing the heritage walk is well worth it to appreciate the tucked away corners. It also has pretty much all you need -cafes, bakery, a superb hardware shop, a whole food shop etc. Not many places to eat in the evening. The surrounding countryside is beautiful.

Alston is a great town and one of my favourites in the country, the area relies on tourism but contains huge amounts of history and culture to explore.
The town is limited on shops but has some great locals stores to support, many of which I try to use when I visit. I hope to see some more cafes and coffee shops in the area
I love wandering into the remaining walking cloth store and around the train museum.
Parking can be tricky and off road parking is limited but there is road parking around.

This is an interesting alive village.
This is an interesting alive village. There is a railway trip that goes from Alston to Scallywag from the station in town and from here you can explore Hadrian's Wall and Bowes Castle. As it is high in the Pennines, some amazing views of the local area.

The Victoria offers accommodation in the heart of Alston that is priced fairly – especially for those of us stopping off on a long distance walk – with all amenities and great wifi. The food is good - fab burgers - and the owners are really friendly. I had to change my booking at the last minute and Paul was understanding and immediately helped me change the booking. That kind of service is not universal these days and was much appreicated.

Accommodation - fine/good
We didn’t dine there so can’t comment- we ate at the Alston House, people say the Cumberland Arms is also ok - better beer but a more basic menu I think. Breakfast at Lowbyer was fine for us walkers, all the usual stuff but not til 8am - might be a problem for some
Bar in the cellar with tv, big garden, welcoming hosts (but possibly unmanned til 3pm)
We three 60+ blokes used a twin and single room - all fine

The road down to the hotel is a bit of a trial at the moment. But they do have it in hand. The hotel itself is an old building with lots of the old detail in evidence. The room we had(14) was big and comfortable. Staff were great. Breakfast was amazing. Definitely set you up for the day. Only negative I would mention is the need for a chair in the room. Would certainly recommend this hotel. 👌

Everything about the property and location was excellent.
The sun came out and Alston shined, really lovely people who were happy we were visiting.

Place was clean and tidy great location to go to Scotland or lake district great little town alston and was right in centre lovely little cottage hidden away hence the name and right opposite coop 😀
